Gas Station Blues
Hours went by, and all we could see was trees, wreaked cars, and that was it. Sometime later, just as I was starting doze away, the Funvee stopped, and Fairburne got out and knocked on the window.
“It’s our lucky day, we actually found a gas station, let’s hope it still has some fucking gas.”
Chill and I got out the car, this place looked like it had once been a small community, but it also looked like it had not been such a thing in a while. I looked over at the pumps, and one thing caught my eye, a suspiciously familiar blue truck with lights on top. I pulled out my rifle, and slowly walked towards it, there was no one inside, but I was creeped out all the while. I opened the door, there was a bottle of Parsecs Whiskey, and also a working CD player, I pulled the CD out and saw what it was.
Fucking, Dan Sarington. I cried out, “Oh fucking hell!”
Chill ran over to where I was, and saw exactly what I was worried about. “Oh no, no no no, not him!” He also remembered, this was that creepy ass fucker Nate’s car.
“Shit, Chill you think he’s nearby?”
“I don’t know, it looks like it’s been here a while, but I can’t tell, it looks like it’s also taken some beating to.”
I noticed what he meant, “Yeah, it looks like someone shot this truck up, god do I hope he is gone.”
Fairburne walked over to Chill, he told him “We got good news and bad news, good news, is the pumps still work and has gasoline, bad news, it’s going to take some time to fill up the tank. I recommend searching this place for some supplies or something.”
Chill and I nodded, we both knew we were just killing time until the Funvee was ready, we first checked inside the station. There was nothing of any value, seems the original owners had taken everything, except for one odd item. There was a picture on one of the dinner tables, it had a man with an afro, with a name written in ink. I could vaguely make it out as Clive, I had no fucking idea who the hell that was, but it was all that was left behind.
We both walked out, heads hung low in disappointment, so we instead walked over to the rest room, we checked the guys side, there was nothing there at all, no surprise. The girls side also had nothing of note in terms of items, there was a shit ton of blood inside though, at two different points, one near the door, and the other against the wall near the sink. On the ground I saw a bullet casing, fairly old, it didn’t matter what had happened, we were again just killing time.
I walked out, all I did was lean against the wall, waiting for Chill to come out when I noticed a squirrel looking at me. I had not seen one of those things in god knows how long, it felt good seeing that some animals in nature were still around.
Chill came out a moment later, he picked up a rock and tossed it at the squirrel, because why not? It panicked and ran up a tree behind the rest room, I ran after it, I guess I like squirrels now.
I ran to the tree and looked up, I could not find it, I turned to Chill, who had a real smug face, “Jesus Chill, the first wild animal we have seen in a year and you just happen to toss a rock at it? What is wrong with yo-.”
Before I could finish my insult I tripped and fell over something, I looked down and saw what it was. It was a grave, pretty makeshift too, it was a basic cross made out of wood. I could see the faint letters of a name, but I could not tell who it was. Hey I guess I am morbid also. I got on my knees and took a good look at the name, it clearly had four letters, I could make out an O and D, but the other letters were hard to read. Chill took a look himself, he had much better eyesight then me anyway, he took one good look, and was visibly shaken.
“What now Chill? You are really living up to that name you know? What are the other two letters?”
“M, I, Tyler, that is Omid’s grave!”
“What? No, it can’t be, are you sure? No way, do you know how far Savannah is? It can’t be, no way.”
I did not know what to think, Omid might not be a common name, but there was no way it was the Omid we knew.
Chill looked at me with sad eyes, “You don’t believe it either do you? I can’t either, I hate to do this, but we have to know somehow.”
I silently nodded, I mean I did not know Omid all that well, he was a pretty cool guy, Chill and I laughed at that one joke back in the attic. What made us really scared was what this might mean. All this time Chill and I believed Clementine had found Omid and Christa along with Booker and Elizabeth, but with Omid dead, it seemed that happy ending we dreamed about was impossible.
I did not know Clementine all that well either, but she was Lee Everett’s will to live, and he was a swell guy. I felt dead inside just thinking about what this meant. I was thinking about this so much, that I did not notice Chill came back with a shovel.
“You can’t be serious, you’re going to dig up a grave? If it’s not him, then what? You just desecrated a grave, what then?”
“Well some days you have to take chances, and it’s better to be wrong and know, then to be right and never know.”
I stepped aside, Chill took the shovel and stabbed it hard into the earth, and piece by piece, he dug up the grave. A few minutes later, and the grim deed was done.
Chill left the shovel in the dirt and took one good look at the body which still had skin on it. If I had to guess, it had been roughly 100 days since this man had been buried. He was wearing a different jacket, it was not the same one from Savannah, but the fact the body still had skin made this sadly a quick identification.
Chill looked at me and slowly nodded, it really was the Omid we had known. Some days I feel like it is better not to know some peoples fate, it makes us all feel better to have hope. It was also very clear what had killed him. A gunshot wound to the chest close to what I assume was the right lung, and one to the head, likely to make sure he did not turn.
Chill quickly ran to Funvee, he got Eldridge, and the rest to come over here. It was all so surreal, I stood there with a blank stare, looking at the body of a fellow group member I had known a year ago. Everything went silent, I could not hear the sound of birds singing happy songs, I could not hear or feel the whispering winds. I could not even hear the sermon that Eldridge gave about Omid, all I could hear were memory's. Happy memory's, of a man joking about a statue, and a expression that would make anyone laugh. I only snapped out when Chill handed me my rifle.
We all gave this poor man a 21 gun salute, he might never have been in the military, he might not have had an American name, he might not have even killed a walker, but he deserved all the honors he got that day.
Fairburne with help from Upshur somehow dragged the refrigerator from the station to this quiet location. Chill widened the hole while Eldridge got rid of all the shelves in the fridge. I was the unlucky man who had to pick up Omid, his huge eyes were still in their sockets, it terrified me greatly.
The fridge was lowered into the hole, and I slowly lowered my fallen friend into the ground once again. Chill closed the fridge door, we started to slowly rebury Omid, it was slow affair. We both slowly piled the mountains of dirt back where it had once laid.
I stopped paying attention to what was going on, I felt like a machine and exhausted. I put the final piece of dirt on the grave. Chill found a blooming flower nearby, he pulled it up from the roots and tossed it on the mound. Both Upshur and Eldridge said they were sorry for our loss, Fairburne clearly did not care, he wanted to get out of here the moment the guns were fired. We both gave Omid some parting words, and then we slowly walked away, just as the sun started to very slowly go down, we got back in the Funvee, no one said a word to each other. Chill and I both thought it was strange Faulkner had not said a word during the farewell.
As the Funvee started to slowly move, Chill and I both knew something very well, that this world of death and destruction had somehow taken a wonderful, funny man away from the realm of the living, and what a loss it really was.
