So I guess I somehow ended up flirting with Kaidan without realizing? I was talking to Liara and all of a sudden she was asking if Shepard and Kaidan were together lol. I like Kaidan but he's a bit boring so I said we were just friends, and then Liara immediately put Shepard on the spot asking if she has feelings for her.
I am so so torn. The cutesy, awkward but sweet alien girl is such a great character type to play off my Shepard and aside that I do genuinely like Liara, but I also genuinely like Garrus and he's just.... I mean.... yeah. I think I can have a relatonship with Liara in ME1, Garrus in 2, and then in 3 when Liara shows up again I'll be forced to choose between them? I may as well choose now I guess but... hm...
Aside from that the gameplay is just.... not a good time for me. I fought that big plant boss? Died so many times. I'm playing it all the way down on casual and still barely scrapping by.

Honestly, I don't get why people don't like ME1's combat. You get to mess with every class in the game, tossing fools in the air for days, sending Wrex to level buildings, etc. The combat in ME2 onwards just became rock paper scissors based on what type of health shielding they had, and the boring, samey corridors of chest high walls made sure that basically every fight felt the same. The most different it ever felt to me was a sniper section in the tutorial. Maybe the combat got good later on in ME2, but I wouldn't know. I dropped it because of how boring it was outside of dialogue.

I mean, in my opinion, the combat in ME1 is so awful I can barely be motivated to finish the game.

I dropped it because of how boring it was outside of dialogue. IMO it's because the combat of ME1 is very stiff and non-responsive. Sure, you have more tactical options and powers to use than the rest of the franchise but it's difficult to appreciate that when you have to fight against the game to use any of them. And some classes don't really get all those fun options, like the Soldier (The one true class), who just gets to be invulnerable for a little while. In ME2 they certainly cut a lot of things and streamlined the rest, but it resulted in combat that, while simpler, was far more fluid and enjoyable. It feels like Shepard is responding to my input in a way that they never did in the first game. Still a little sluggish at some points, but never anywhere near the level of ME1. And considering the amount of shooting that gets done in all three games I'd rather have less options with a smoother experience than the reverse.

Well, ME1 bored me so I went back to Dragon Age and finished Awakening and Witch Hunt.
Awakening was pretty good. I didn't do most of the sidequests and was a little disappointed about how the companions were handled, but overall I liked it. I loved Anders, and the whole storyline was pretty interesting. Witch Hunt went by super quick, and was a little anti-climactic given that I was friends with Morrigan, but denied her ritual, so... I didn't end up with either extreme of trying to kill her or being on her side.
Anyway, on to Dragon Age 2 I guess!

Welp, I thought I was gonna romance Fenris but now I'm not sure since it seems I'm destined to be rivals with him.

Idk, i guess i still haven't even met all the companions so we'll see I suppose. I wish he just didn't hate literally any time I'm even vaguely nice to other mages.

Fuck him too. Each romance differs depending on if you've done the Friend or Rival path. Don't quote me on this because the only rivalmance (Actually, the only romance I've done at all) is Isabela. The Friend path seems to be more encouraging of the companion's personality while the Rival path seems to be getting them to change (Through hate fucking, I guess?) Speaking of Isabela, keep dropping by the tavern throughout Act 1. She can be missed entirely if you don't pick her up before finding the 50 gold. I missed her on my first playthrough, and that caused some confusion with a lot of stuff in Act 2.

Yeah I sort of wish there was a way to like, talk to him and maybe try and change his mind? Like, there's a bit early where he found out Hawke was a mage and it seemed like he was willing to give her a chance and I thought that might lead to something but then he just hates it whenever I don't opt to just murder or imprison every mage I come across so Then there's Merill who seems... a little.... um, off? And Anders who I really really liked in Awakening. And Isabelle who, I haven't met yet.

You can kind of bring Fenris back a little on the mage hate as you go on, and I believe it might go faster and rougher (heh) in a rivalmance. But, for all of DA2's many many flaws I don't think that having the characters be set like they are is one of them. Well, it's a bit too drastic with some )cough ANDERS AND FENRIS cough) but I felt it gave them a sense of being more real. They have their own stalwart beliefs and it takes a lot to change them. It's far from perfect, but the game's development cycle was almost cut in half by EA from what I heard. I dislike Merrill with an intensity that is entirely uncalled for, but she rubs me the wrong way in every conversation. I rarely take her out in the party. Part of it might be that they changed her voice actress and personality from Origins so she feels like a different character. I liked Anders in Awakening too. He was, in fact, one of my favorite companions there, but I have a few issues with how he is in 2. Isabela suffers from some of the same problems Merrill does, and while I do have several qualms with her they aren't nearly as intense as my issues with the other three options, so she won my Hawke's heart by being the least bad, and a bit of a Han Solo knock off.
