This War of Mine is a survival game following a group of survivors in a city under siege. They take shelter in an abandoned building, and try to survive, interacting with other survivors, repairing their base, scavenging, and trying not to die. It's very dark, and even though all the events are randomly generated, these events can carry a great deal of emotion. All together, a fantastic, and horribly dark game.

I just finished my first game. Well, I mean, I quit mt first game. By Day 5, my survivors were starving. I came across a house where the residents, an old man and his wife, in need of medication, still had quit a bit of food. My options were to steal from them, or let my own people starve. Eventually, I stole some food, and ran away. The next day, I came across some guy trying to take care of his dying father. We needed meds, as recently, some raiders came and injured someone, so I tried to sneak past the guy and take just maybe one or two bandages.
And then he shot Pavle(one of my survivors). I quit, so hopefully, I can do better next time by just avoiding everyone.

This sounds amazing. Can you name your survivors, or are they prenamed?

This does sound quite great, heard about it a couple month's back, sounds like what you get if you mixed X-Com with Spec Ops the Line, not a combo I would recommend for the faint of heart.

I got it, and it doesn't seem much like that. It's great, don't get me wrong, but the gameplay isn't super amazing. At least not before you get guns. Once you get weapons and guns and shit, things might be different, but the early game isn't fun gameplay wise. It's all about the organic stories that come about these predefined characters. For instance, I lost my man Pavle, because I had him try to stop a rape, and he got shot. After that, Bruno and Katia spent several days trying to recover, and find suitable food. Unfortunately, however, Katia died due to illness. Bruno spent several days moping about, until I had him rob a church, where he was killed.

The gameplay is definitely not the focus. You work on your base in the day, sometimes there are random events, for example, some kids came by saying that their Mom was very ill, I didn't have any medicine though, so everyone was sad afterwards, except Pavle, that heartless bastard. At night, you can scavenge, trade with people, as you get more tools and enter bigger areas, this becomes more complex. At one point, I went to "Sniper Junction". Lots of weapons and materials, but, as you would imagine, the place was crawling with snipers. You have to listen for the shots, and run form cover to cover as they reload. Unfortunately, it's not to clear o what exactly cover is, so Pavle was shot in the head(I believe you can equip them with helmets to avoid instant kills from snipers).
Obstacles come up as you scavenge. you can use a crowbar to pry open doors, shovel to move debris, a saw to cut bars, etc. Some areas are very complex in their design and layout.
Then there's stealth. Occasionally, you'll come across some hostile people. Since I've yet to find a gun, I've mostly tried sneaking around them. You can take cover in doorways, etc, there are hiding places, running and scavenging makes noise. Light and sound mostly determines stealth.
I also haven't had much experience with combat. At one point, I decided I could take down a guy with a shotgun with my shovel if I snuck up on him, unaware that climbing down a ladder does make some noise. He turned around, and promptly blasted my survivor, Marko, in the face. I know you can take cover and what not, but combat is mostly stealth oriented until you get a gun.
I'm going to start my third game soon. Right now, only Bruno is alive, he's hurt, and I've got no food, no point in seeing it to the end.

I'm doing much better this time, I traded meds for an axe, which you can use to chop up all the useless furniture in your base for wood and fuel. I'm getting better at stealth, too.

Huh, so I found out something else interesting. The first time I went to the church, there were bandits who had killed the priest, but this time(separate game), the priest was there and so was his "flock". Unfortunately, they didn't trust me, so while I was just looking around, some guy hit Pavle with a bat, I tried to hit back, but mis clicked, and ended up hacking up the priest with a hatchet.
But since someone in the building attack first, everyone at my base was a-okay with that.
Oh, and a new survivor showed up, Boris.

With this type of game, gameplay is not suppose to be the main focus, it's like Valiant Hearts, it's there, but it's not the main focus and what everyone talks about.

Can confirm: Combat is pretty fantastic. Very tense, simple, yet there's a lot to it. I still haven't really used any guns, but now I've got two, pistol and a rifle. Only 4 bullets though.
I decided to scavenge in a hotel for food, turns out a bunch of psychopaths had made it their home. I found a bunch of horribly mutilated bodies, and someone locked up in a room, being tortured. I killed two of them with my axe, and took their guns, freed their captive, and got out of there. Maybe now that I have some real firepower, I can go back and clear the place out.

Oh, that is unexpected, but good none the less.
