The light of dawn shone through the window, brightening the room. Clementine opened her eyes and sat up, her stiff bones cracked. Nate was right, she had slept in worse places, but the sleeping bag wasn't much different to the hard, stone, cold floor. At least added a bit of comfit.
She crawled out of the bedroll and stood up. She glanced around the room, taking note that Nate's bedroom door was wide open. She walked up to it and knocked on the door before peering inside. The bed was empty and the sheets were upturned. Nate wasn't there.
Not wanting to get caught in Nate's room, she quickly backed out. If he wasn't in his room or anywhere else, then he must be out side. Clementine walked up to the front door and opened it without thinking.
A walker was standing outside, it's head spun around when it caught the scent of human flesh. Clementine backed away, accidentally tripping over her own feet. She fell back and bashed her head on the hard floor, the slight head trauma sending her into a daze. Her vision blurred as the walker lunged at her, throwing itself on top of the little girl.
Clementine reached out her arms and latched onto the walkers wrists, holding it above her as it attempted to sink it's snapping teeth into her neck. Her bitten arm stung, helping her realise that she didn't have the strength to hold the walker off forever. Her arms weakened as she quickly pulled her legs up, she let go of the walkers wrists and kicked it off, allowing her to crawl out from underneath.
Clementine squealed as the walker grabbed hold of her foot and attempted to pull her ankle towards it's jaws. Clementine kicked it in the face, stunning it for a brief moment, causing the walker to release her foot.
She staggered to her feet and backed away, looking frantically around the room in search of a weapon. To her right was Nate's rifle and to her left was her pen knife on the kitchen unit. She glanced back at the walker to see that it was now on it's feet, and that it's stomach was wide open and it's guts were spilling out.
Clementine stared at the rifle. She didn't know how to use one. Well, she did, kind of. Christa said it was like shooting a hand gun, but she also said that she wasn't ready to use one since the recoil strong. Clementine made her choice and ran towards the kitchen unit, scooping up her pen knife and turning towards the walker.
She ran up to the walker and stamped on its knee, it's leg buckled and it collapsed onto its hands and knees. Clementine twisted her arm and stabbed the walker in the back of the head, killing it. It's body went slack and fell limply to the ground.
"What the fuck?!" the familiar voice of Nate yelled in surprise. The eleven year old panted heavily and lifted her head to see Nate standing in the doorway, holding a bottle in his hand. She guessed it was alcohol.
"Can't a man step out to get a drink without shit hitting the fan back home?!" He exclaimed as he stormed into the room.
"Where were you?" Clementine asked breathlessly.
"In the cellar outside, it's where I keep my whiskey- wait, don't change the subject. That thing is gonna stink up the place" he said, pointed at the walker on the ground "It's your mess, help me move it"
Nate grabbed onto the arms while Clementine took hold of the legs and together they carried it outside. Clementine took in her surroundings as the two walked besides the small, simple log cabin and dumped the body a good distance away. She scanned the trees, checking for more walkers when her eyes fell upon the truck parked close by house.
"Is that yours?" She asked, walking up to it.
"Yeah." Nate stated simply as he followed her over. "Ain't she a beauty?" He asked, patting the bonnet.
"It's nice, I guess" Clementine murmured "Does it work?"
"No" Nate replied with a sigh as he climbed onto the front of the truck and sat on it "This bad boy used to take me all over the place but now it's broken, there's something wrong with the engine, I've tried to fix it but I'be had no luck"
"Maybe you could try again, if you fix this then it good gets us to Wellington" Clementine said, copying Nate by sitting on the truck.
"What is it with you and Wellington?" He grumbled.
"Because the camp there might be real and Christa could be there. There might be people you know there"
"Everyone I know is dead" Nate replied, a touch of sadness in his voice. Clementine gave him a sympathetic look. "There might be some tail, though" he muttered with a grin on his face.
"'Tail'?" Clementine questioned his words.
"You're too young to know about that stuff kid". Nate paused, lost in thought. Maybe he could take the kid to Wellington after all. He could get the truck working. They could find Christa. He might even be able to bang her. Yes, maybe ditching the kid wasn't a good idea after all. Plus, he'd missed being on the road and he fancied a road trip. He smirked. This'll be fun.
"You know what, Clementine?" Nate said, turning towards her.
"What?"
"I think we can do this"

Nate had produced a red tool box from within the house and started work on the trucks engine. Clementine helped out the best she could, even though she didn't know anything about cars but she would hand Nate the tool he wanted and occasionally gave him an extra hand at fixing it.
Several hours passed, Nate continued working while Clementine sat by the tool box, getting up every so often to examine what he was doing and then slumping back down beside the tool box. "I think I've found the problem" Nate finally spoke up after a long period of silence with the occasionally huff and grunt.
Clementine stood up and stared into the engine compartment "You see this here?" He asked, pointing at some pipes "They are damaged, so the fuel has been leaking and that means the engine can't run"
"Can you fix it?" Clementine asked,
"Yeah, piece of cake. The only problem is I'll need to salvage some more fuel once I've repaired it"
"We could go on a supply run" Clementine suggested.
"That's fucking stupid-" he paused "Wait, there's a road nearby, so there must be cars there, and I think there's a gas station nearby too. I have some empty gasoline tanks as well" he murmured, considering their options "Yeah, I think we can do that. It won't take long to repair the problem, so if there's still time we'll head out and get ourselves some fuel, sound like a plan?"
"I think it's a good idea" Clementine replied encouragingly.
"Lets get to it then"

Nate mopped his brow, and rubbed his grease covered hands on his trousers, while backing away from the engine to get a better view of their hard work. Clementine stood beside him with a considerable amount of black, greasy oil coating her hands and face. "Done!" He exclaimed triumphantly.
Clementine smiled up at him "That's great"
Nate stared down at her and almost spluttered a laugh when he saw the oil on her face. He thought about commenting on it but then decided it would be funny if he left it for a while. He glanced around at the scenerary and noticed that the sun was still fairly high in sky. "I think we have enough time to head out and get that gasoline" he commented. "What do you think, kid, shall we head out?"
Clementine thought for a moment and then nodded "Yeah, we should"
"Alright, lets get ready" and with that, he walked past Clementine and back towards the house "By the way, you have something on your face" he said, looking over his shoulder.
"Oh" she replied weakly, lifting her hand and rubbing her face, but only adding more oil onto her cheeks "Did I get it?" She asked.
Nate wasn't sure if he could contain his laughter for much longer "Yeah, you got it" he said, almost choking up.
"Are you ready?" Nate asked.
Clementine, who didn't have an dirty face anymore, looked up at the older man and nodded briefly "Yeah" she responded simply.
"You remember the plan, right?"
"Get to the road, find some cars and a gas station, try to fill up both tanks and then head back before it gets dark" Clementine stated.
Nate nodded, slightly impressed. "You're missing something, though" he murmured. Before Clementine could ask, he proceeded to pull a glock from his waist band and shoved it into her hand "There. Now you can protect yourself. You know how to use one, don't you?"
Clementine adjusted her grip on the glock "Sure. I learnt how to when I was eight. My friend Lee taught me"
"I was gonna say; if you didn't know how to use a gun, then how the fuck did you make it this far, but I didn't expect that kind of answer, anyway" he commented, uninterested by her short tale of her friend 'Lee', whoever the fuck he was. He certainly didn't want to indulge any further into it, since it was probably some depressing shit.
Nate picked up his rifle and then scooped up a gasoline tank, while Clementine picked up the second one, so they had one each. He then handed her the piece of a hose pipe, and kept another piece for himself. "We're all set" he commented, glancing at the window to see that the sky was tinted with a bright orange glow from the gradually setting sun. "Come on, Clem, lets go" he said, walking over to the front door and throwing it open "We're burnin' daylight".

Nate led the way along a dirt track which had been located behind the house. The mud was thick in places, sometimes Clementine would end up sinking if she stood still for too long. The damp autumn leaves below there feet squenceled under foot as they walked, and the air was dense as a mist began to roll in.
The sky was no longer tinted with an orange glow but instead it was cloaked by some overhanging grey clouds. "I hope it doesn't rain" Nate muttered, kicking up a few leaves in an attempt to entertain himself.
"Is this how you got to the house? You drove along this dirt track?" Clementine asked.
"Yeah. My truck was making some odd noises, and not wanting to be caught out in the open I turned off the main road and drove until it broke down." He told her.
"How long have you been living in that place, anyway?'
"I've been stuck in that place for a month, and it's been driving me nuts. I hate being stuck in one place."
"It's best to move as much as possible" Clementine told him confidently. "It's easy to avoid walkers that way"
"Yeah, that's true"

Okay, I really want to get this part in my head down, so I'm going to skip ahead for a bit and then I'm going to loop back. So basically; they get the truck working, they collect some of Nate's shit and leave. The truck breaks down a couple of days later and they decided to abandon it and make their way to Wellington on foot.

"We're not going to right way" Clementine stated as she examined the map in her hands. "We should've stuck to the road like I said so now we're lost"
Nate glanced round at the woods and then sighed "Fine, I'll admit defeat, you were right"
"Can we follow the map now?" She asked, lifting it up to him.
"Yeah, whatever"
Clementine glanced down at the map "I'm sure the road isn't too far from here, if we just go back the way we came then-". Nate pushed Clementine's hat down over her eyes teasingly "Hey!"
Nate grinned in response and chuckled lightly. The sounds of barking came from the bushing along with the thundering of paws as a dog came bounding into the open area. Clementine's eyes widened and she quickly ducked behind Nate. Looking at the dog reminded her of Sam, causing the intense pain she had felt in her bitten arm to return even though it had healed over and become a scab.
Meanwhile, Nate stared at the dog as it barked viscously at him. It was brown and white patched, with floppy ears and a short tail. If he had to guess the breed, he would say it was a spaniel but he wasn't a dog expert. Although he had dated a girl once who was obsessed with dogs. She loved dogs more than she loved him. Wouldn't stop going on about. Never again. But you can't help but pick up a few things after living with a dog lover for a few months.
"Bronte!" A voice called out from the trees. A moment later a woman emerged from the bushes "There you are". She didn't seem concerned by Nate and Clementine's presence, instead she walked straight up to her dog and knelt down beside him, playing with his ears. "Who's an old silly? You are" she fussed.
Nate shifted his gaze from the woman to Clementine and then back at the woman. She was dressed for the winter. She was wearing a brown leather jacket with grey-ish blue trousers. Her long hair, which was tied back in a loose ponytail, was a dark brown and her eyes were light green. After fussing her dog she lifted her head and stared at the two of them before her eyes fell upon Clementine. She smiled warmly and lifted her hand, giving the eleven year old a wave. "Hi"
Clementine glanced nervously at 'Bronte' and then back at the strange woman. "Don't worry, darlin', he won't hurt you. He's an old sweet heart. His bark is worse than his bite" she told her encouragingly "Why don't you come over here and give him a pat?"
Clementine looked to Nate for approval, who nodded in response. She proceeded to step out from behind him and approach Bronte. She bent down and cautiously stroked his neck. "Play with his ears, he likes that". Clementine did so, and Bronte barked happily "See? I told ya. Bronte wouldn't hurt a fly"
He continued to stroke Bronte while the woman turned towards Nate "The names Anna, what's yours?" she asked.
"Nate" he stated simply.
"And the girl?"
"Clementine"
"Well you've both already met Bronte, so I don't need to introduce him"
