Spoilers for the ending. The mutinies by the French on the western front were caused by two main factors. The first, covered in the game, was the battle of Naville (named after the general who ordered the assault, I think. Don't quote me on that), and other bloodbaths caused by incompetence in the French military command. The other was the communist revolution in Russia. France has always been a hotbed of radicalism, and there were plenty of socialists and communists in the basic ranks. Once they heard about the revolution in Russia, they were suprised. Russia was a agricultural backwater. According to Marx, the great revolutions were supposed to take place in industrialized countries that had experienced a wave of capitalism (Britian, France, and Germany, for example.) The socialists in the French ranks used existing unrest amongst nearly all soldiers in the front, and mutinies erupted everywhere. Nearly half the French army started waving the Red flag.
We all know how happily (sarcasm) things turned out in Russia after the revolution. France would have likely managed to one up them if they were successful. Keep in mind, most of the men who mutinied were like Emille. Men who didn't want to die. Men who had wives or children who they wanted to see again. They were sick of their lives being thrown away.
The government listened to their complaints, and things started to improve. A new, competent, general was put in charge. Soldiers were given more leave time, and weren't used as bullet sponges for worthless assaults.
The French government managed to pull one of the greatest cover ups in history, managing to convince everyone that the mutiny was limited to a few regiments. The men who were executed were the ones who were the main agitators, and Emille, having killed an officer (in spite of it being an accident), would have definitely been executed.
The tragic thing about this is that Emille wasn't some agitator who wanted to overthrow the government of France and cause another bloodbath to add to the war. He was a man who thought he had lost his son in law, and wanted to see his daughter and grandson. He was what most soldiers who fight in almost any war are: men who hate war.
Also, the first thing I tried to do when I got to Emille's section was try to smack. The officer. I was tired of the sickness. I was tired of the death. I didn't want my life to be thrown away. The first time I saw him behind the four of us, shouting orders from the rear, I tried to smack him again. If you get too close, he shoots you for fleeing. I died quite a bit on that level (especially when you had to dig through the maze with the bombs falling on you). I was frustrated by the end, and I didn't have a single hesitation before hitting the officer at the end.

Well this is my non spoiler review of the game, just buy it! Not since Spec Ops: The Line have I seen a unique war game, and like Spec Ops, it doesn't glorifies war in the way COD or Battlefield does. It explores two things rarely done in games, the human aspect of war, and World War I, both of which are incredibly rare. I loved it, it conveys story without much words, which might not be necessarily better then one with words, but its unique and different and worth praises. The characters are all great, you quickly get attached to them, you understand there plight, and hope for the best, and it doesn't go well for everyone, also the dog is one of the best dogs in gaming. I can go on and on about this, really I can, at the moment, I see no reason NOT to give it a 10/10, seriously, I found little to no reasons to hate it, the graphic style was cool, the story emotional, the characters likable, and I walked away knowing a great deal of information about World War I, and I am not a slouch, I know a lot, so that in itself is beyond amazing, thank god for Ubisoft, and for the moment, my leading GOTY! I actually have three complaints. 1.Graphical glitches: Frequent enough to be annoying, only once where they somewhat game altering. Maybe it was just me. 2. WSAD control wasn't default, and didn't work with Anna's sections when I changed it. 3. Game glitches: there was one point where I had to restart a level because something wasn't working. Hey, what you described is still less glitchy then TWD.

The battle was called Chemin Des Dames, but it was frequently called Naville.

I'm at Chapter 3, about half way through I think. This game is incredible. And because of it, my list of favorite games has now been revised once more.

Yeah, I called that Emile would die. I didn't think it'd happen like that, though. Not executed by his own side, though once he killed the officer I suspected that might be his fate. I knew from the beginning of that level that the game would end in tears, when the officer (who got what was coming to him) ordered Emile to bring those guys who were obviously in no shape to fight along for the attack. I died quite a bit in that level too, though I never tried to hit the officer like Mike did until the end. I was just praying the pointless attack would be called off at some point, but that wasn't very likely at all. No regrets over hitting the officer. Like Emile said in his final letter to Marie, his honor was assured. I have to say that I broke into tears almost immediately after Emile was let out of his cell at the end. Knowing he was gonna be shot for what he did the entire way to the post was agonizing. The officers should have been shot for wasting so many lives. They're the real criminals.
RIP Emile Chaillon.
