You know, I've come to realize something about Bioshock Infinite.....
What kind of social commentary is it trying to make? Because, as far as I can see.... it doesn't.
I mean, the first two were very clear in this regard, and it's pretty much their biggest strengths.
But thinking back on it, Bioshock Infinite doesn't really make any sort of social commentary like it's predecessors. I'm not sure it's necessary that it did, probably expected at the least, but, along with all the changes gameplay wise, I think this is probably why I don't like the game.
In the previous ones, plasmids, the city itself, everything surrounding the supposed culture, that all made sense in the grand scheme of things, it was there to support the sort of social commentary the game was trying to make. Rapture is at the bottom of the ocean because Ryan wanted it to be isolated, to keep it away from the "parasites". Plasmids were created as part of a drive for scientific advancement, and were allowed to do this because science advanced at a break-neck speed in the environment that Ryan had created, where " petty morals" did not get in the way of science. And, people used plasmids, hence splicers.
Bioshock 2 had this as well, more in exploring the relationship between the Big Daddy's and Little Sisters, and the creation of the Big Daddy's themselves. I mean, nowhere near the original, but it was still present, that's for sure. Also, Bioshock 2 was a really good game, and... well, people know my position on Infinite in terms of gameplay....
Now, Bioshock Infinite has the city, the plasmidsvigors, and all that, but.... there's no reason for it to exist. None at all. There's no reason for Comstock to be the leader of Columbia. People don't use vigors, so why do they exist? I liked the explanation of their presence that was given in Burial at Sea, but that doesn't fix how they were handled in Infinite.
Infinite doesn't try to make any sort of social commentary, it's more about all the crazy time travel stuff, which is full of plot holes, but done pretty okay, I suppose, and the relationship between Booker and Elizabeth, which is fantastic.

How cool would it be if Bioshock had Oculus Rift support?

How cool would it be if Bioshock had Oculus Rift support? Pretty damn good, because it's a very easy game to get immersed into, and really for a good portion of it, it's a horror game, and damn good one at that with the impendingdread and the atmosphere fucking with you instead of cheap jumpscares every five seconds.

It's sad that I laugh with that every time I hear it?

Well okay this is a really strange reason to resurrect this thread, but Ken Levine just mentioned something about Infinite that was never mentioned anywhere, book, game, or DLC, he thought about it, but never put it, though it is slightly hinted in an ad. I know this doesn't matter, I just found it interesting seeing how we are coming up on the two year anniversary, he revealed what Comstock's wife's real name. It was Annabelle Watson, or as good old Ken said it, "Anna to her good friends." Anna... huh where did I hear that before??? Yeah, actual name of Elizabeth, the middle name she took after the Infinite, interesting..... well that just gave me a slew of new ideas, well just wanted to mention that, because I sure as hell was not expecting that info today.

HOLY SHIT STOP THE PRESSES!!! There was a follow up Tweet that just said, "Comstock and Booker had a very similar taste in woman, Constant or Veritable? Constant." So that means........... Elizabeth's real mother WAS LADY COMSTOCK! HOLY SHIT!!! That changes the Siren fight up a bit you think? So I get it now... Anna DeWitt... that's where the name came from, and they both died, at different times under different circumstances... Thanks Ken I never would have guessed that goddamn! That made my day!

So... she's really Anna Junior then? Huh. Seems like it, funny to have such a major little thing revealed to you only, oh, two years after the games release, gotta keep you on your toes!

I know, funnily enough I never actually gave much thought to who was Elizabeth's real mother. I always accepted it as not an important detail, the farthest I ever got to even thinking about it was that maybe that picture of a whore named Sally might have been his wife, if only because Booker says he vaguely remember's that woman. Never thought the question would be answered, and now that I know, I can't say I should have seen this coming, but I really should have thought about the possibility of the whole constant and veritable's a bit with the question. Regardless, it's really cool to find out info on a game you love almost two years after it came out.
