Dan offered him his hand. Michael grunted and got up by himself, brushing off dirt. He leaned down and scooped up to rifle and without hesitation aimed at the distant targets. "Lets try again, shall we?" Uncle Dan said, standing behind Michael and placing one hand on his shoulder. Michael shrugged him off. Uncle Dan sighed "Look, kid, I know you don't like me and I know you are pretty pissed about your dad leaving you here but you're just gonna have to deal with it. This world doesn't give a shit about what you want"
Michael narrowed his eyes "Don't talk about my dad" he growled.
"I'll talk about Lucas if I want, I am his brother after all"
"And what a rotten brother you are"
"Look, Mike, I'm not going to baby you, I'm not gonna hold your hand the entire time, you gotta grow up" he informed the 10 year old boy.
"I already have!" Michael yelled, his eyes glistened with tears. He lowered his head sadly, the rifle drooping in his hands. He silently lifted it and stared down the top.
"You ready to try shooting with bullets?" Rachel asked.
"I think so" Michael responded as she took the hand gun off him and reloaded the clip.
"It's important to preserve ammo, so we're not going too use much. We also can't risk too much noise" she told him, handing him the gun. "It's going to be loud but... I'll cover your ears"
Michael lifted the gun and aimed for the nearest tree while Rachel cupped her hands around his ears "Little to the left" she told him, Michael adjusted the gun to her instruction.
The gun went off, the bullet hit the base of the tree. Michael squealed. "Are you ok?" Rachel asked concerned.
"Yeah, it's just loud and scary"
"You'll get used to it, just remember what I said; don't panic" she instructed. She glanced over at the tree "Ok, lets do again"
Michael aimed once again "Little higher" she told him. "Now a little to the right". The gun fired, the bullet chipping off pieces of wood.
"I hit it!" He exclaimed.
"You did, now lets give it one more shot" (no pun intended)
Michael aimed one last time and without instructions he fired, hitting the tree first time. "I did it! I did it, mum!" He cried triumphantly "You didn't need to tell me what to do that time."
Rachel's mouth twitched and formed into a weak smile, her head beginning to throb. She always got headaches, this time wasn't any different, even though the cause was very clear to her. Her vision blurred for a brief moment, she blinked hard and reached for her pocket "Yeah... Yeah you did" she murmured as she took out a bottle of pills "Good job, sweetie" she praised him as she put a pill in her mouth.
Michael's smile fell when he saw how pale she was "Are you ok?" He asked.
"I'm fine"
Michael squeezed the trigger and the rifle fired, the bullet hit the target. Dan was behind him and made sure he didn't fall back this time "Good job" Dan told him, slapping the kid on the shoulder.
"Ouch"
