Welcome to the inaugural thread of the Non TTG Games Thread!! For this thread we will be discussing the soon to be SECOND MOST POPULAR zombie game this year, The Last of Us. Probably my favorite game of 2013, The Last of Us's story of Joel and Ellie's journey across the U.S. will be up there with the stories of Booker and Elizabeth, as well as Lee and Clem as one of my favorite video game stories ever.
So what were your guys favorite part of the game? I would have to say the Ellie chapters in the Winter part were really good, as well as the final level where Joel rescues her from the fireflies.

I loved that chapter 2, I would rate it as a great game, a clear nomination for GOTY, best zombie game since Walking Dead, far as this year goes, my favorite games were, 1, Infinite, 2 Last of Us, 3 Wolf Among Us, and I hope season 2 gets in there somewhere.

My favorite game of all time. Beats WD S1 by a slight margin. I can't wait for the DLC.
Looks like we'll be seeing Ellie shoot with a bow more in Left Behind. I don't think we'll shoot a gun, based on her reaction to shooting a guy in Pittsburgh. And clearly, she's only shot a BB rifle before at rats.

That'd be interesting using a BB gun, having to stay behind cover and take like 20 shots at a guy before he dies or something like that.

Well you can try that in Fallout 3, trust me it takes more then 20 shots.

Yeah, it takes like a fucking million. In the first area when you get the BB gun, I remember I tried to kill dad and Jonas, but it wouldn't let me. They would just go unconscious when they had like 2 health or something crazy low. Then I ran out of ammo and beat the snot out of them. ANYWAYS, I liked the Last of Us, but the ending sucked. Ellie should be dead as shit.

I do agree, amazing game, but just a okay ending, maybe they made it to not be like Walking Dead, but what they got was only okay, not Mass Effect 3, but not Infinite either.

Do you mean that Joel should have failed to saved her or that Joel should have just let her be sacrificed for the cure? I'll agree with the former (it was implausible that he made it out of there with her) but I wouldn't agree if you meant that Joel shold have just let them scoop out her brains for the possibility of re-engineering a vaccine.

The explanation is probably that the fungus is so deeply imbedded in her brain that trying to remove any of it would kill her and I guess they need a lot of it to re-engineer a vaccine. What I always wondered is that if she is technically infected and infection is spread through bites, can't they just have her bite someone to pass along her mutated infection? Wouldn't that basically be like a vaccine anyway? And if they still want to have an actual vaccine, just capture one of the random psychopaths roaming around everywhere, have her bite him, and then get the fungus from his brain once it starts growing.

I mean he should've traded this little girl for hundreds or thousands like her. Because of Joel's actions, nobody has a fucking clue on how to stop the virus.

I mean he should've traded this little girl for hundreds or thousands like her. Because of Joel's actions, nobody has a fucking clue on how to stop the virus. Honestly, the infection didn't really seem to me like a major problem in that world actually. They presented it as a huge threat but all you need is a gas mask and a way to keep out the infected and you're fine. A vaccine isn't going to be helping anyone who's already infected and the ones who haven't been infected seem far more likely to be killed by bandits or the military (or Joel...) than a bite. Even if you've been vaccinated, that isn't going to help you out when a clicker tears out your jugular. So I don't see the vaccine really doing that much good even if it's made, and there's no guarantee that it can definitely be made from the fungus inside Ellie's brain. How is a vaccine even going to be distributed by a militia group fighting against the government anyway?
If this were a vaccine for the Walking Dead virus, it would be another story. There's no way to rebuild in that universe with the zombie virus still around since every one is already infected. A vaccine that stops the person vaccinated from turning after they die would be invaluable in that universe so I would definitely trade a life for a good chance at it. The apocalypse in the Last of Us, though, seems to be at the very least manageable and it doesn't appear to me like a vaccine is really that necessary. Overall, I just don't see the benefit outweighing the cost.

Infection is a huge problem in that world. Remember how in the intro, the people were being murdered for being infected? Joel reacted to it like an everyday thing. The way they were living is not sustainable. Sooner or later, that place is going to fall, and when it does, the people who are still left alive will run and get infected, or they'll just get shot for running. Infection was a huge problem there. In fact, I would be less willing to find a vaccine for the walking dead. All it takes is a quick stab, and no one comes back.

It seemed a lot more sustainable than anything the Walking Dead had. Lasted 20 years so far. People are reproducing. There are quarantine zones and even portable scanners invented to check for infection. So clearly, they can are developing ways to help deal with the problem. The threat is external and that means it can be dealt with. With the Walking Dead, sure you can stab someone's brain in to keep them from turning, but that's assuming that you know they're about to die. Even if you've rebuilt, at any moment, some old guy could die unexpectedly, start biting people, and trigger the apocalypse all over again. There's no safe zone.
