With the new remastered Spyro trilogy coming next month, and seeing as there is already a Crash Bandicoot thread, I figured, eh what the hell, I'll start a Spyro thread. Trailer PS1 and PS4 comparison to freeing Nestor

Well, there is a first look at what Sheila the Kangaroo looks like and, uhhh.... Yyyeah. The outfit doesn't really bother me that much. But the hair? Seems unnecessary to add.

Hey, Jayko. What are your thoughts so far on how everything looks remastered?

Played this at my friend's house today (she's good to me, and I'm incredibly grateful). I fell in love with Spyro when I was younger, played two games out of the Legend of Spyro series, but because I've never owned a PlayStation, I didn't get the chance to try out the original trilogy. Despite this, I did have a lot of fun playing the remake. I managed to reach the 4th world, the swamp area, in just 3 hours, with quite a few levels that were done to 100% completion. I love all of the different and unique designs of the dragons, and all the levels are just so gorgeous to look at. Spyro himself has some great animations and the control scheme is really easy to get the hang of. I've also laughed at quite a few of his lines, and I really like his voice (Tom Kenny is a gem). Exploring and finding secret areas is so satisfying to do, I'd like to find all the collectibles at some point.
Hoping to play it some more, maybe even buy it for the Xbox One. Or wait until they perhaps port it to the Switch.

Having both trilogies of my childhood makes me feel like a kid again, and very nostalgic. I love all the new looks on the dragons in Spyro 1. BTW, thank you once again Jayko for showing me how to free that one dragon in Haunted Towers. I'm currently on Ripto's rage and I really enjoy watching the new cutscenes and the new looks for each character. I like details they add with how their lips are in sync with their dialogue while doing their talking animations. And Sparks does some animations while Spyro is idle, such as waving in his face and waving in front of the screen. On the PS4, the light on the controller corresponds to Spark's light/Spyro's health. I even notice how every time you charge, there's a bit drumming playing in the background till you stop. But, over at the Fracture Hills level, with the bushes coming to life and then trying to eat you, it's just- yeah, this is just me, but I do not like that at all. Creeps me out. Oh, and one new feature that's proven really useful is having Sparks point at the nearest treasure. With it, this makes it so much easier to find gems, and apparently, I'm blind as shit cause I keep passing by so many gems in places I've been to and not seeing them in the grass. And I charge and burn Moneybags every time I pay "small fees" for that cheapskate, just for taking my gems.

Okay, normally, I'd advise against cheating. But when you have a trilogy from your childhood with the same usable cheat codes from the PS1, this is a rare exception.

Now I'm on Year of the Dragon. Arguably, the Spyro game my sister and I played the most. Clementine Bianca looks good remastered. One thing I like about this is how there's some additional lines in some cutscenes. Like in the beginning when one of the Dragons shouted to stop Bianca, that one additional line when Hunter tried to save Bianca and how each of Spyro's allies have some dialogue while being shown in their cages. Still not a fan of Sheila's new hairdo. The ace of spades card on Sgt. Byrd's hat is a nice touch. Bentley looks bigger than I remember. And the anti-Rhynoc shown on Agent 9 is very fitting on him. Skateboarding in this game is still as fun as I remember. There was also that bit where Bentley fights a yeti in a boxing match. and what sucked is that you could only do it after you collect both eggs. I was hoping the remaster would let us do it more than once. It doesn't. There was also those creepy-ass winged creatures from Enchanted Towers that I hated back on the PS1. Those things look even creepier in HD. Oh, and Bently's little brother? That little shit is carrying an iPhone with him. Those didn't even exist back then. It make him look like he's my freaking agent or something. And during the credits after I finished the first game, I thought it was showing Spyro in a training montage in pictures, but it looked more like him hanging out with various dragons. There was even one where he's chilling on an actor's chair. With an iPhone. Oh, and about that final boss fight with Ripto, Hunter's flight suit looks better. And the way I remember from the PS1 is that he slipped into the pit of Lave after the metal-Gulp exploded and somehow came out without a scratch in the final cutscene. In the Remaster, he just ends up on top of a tower with a mere scratch. And I forgot how cool it was to battle Ripto while airborne.

I've been ass deep in this game for like 5 days while I'm not working, and so far I really fucking love it.
Oddly I've been playing the trilogy backwards (Just beat 3 100% and now I've started 2) so I can end on 1 which is both my favourite of the three and clearly the most polished and thought through of the remake. Not to say 3 is bad, but it feels like simply a HD upscale in some regards with less embellishment that makes 1 and 2 feel more creative in their worldbuilding. Where 1 turned Dark Hollow into a library themed level with areas that feel lived in by the dragons you find, levels like Dino Mines just feel like a 1:1 remake with very little changed - and I've already played Spyro 3 to the point where it's tedious so I wanted to get that one out of the way ASAP.
Regardless, 3 isn't a bad game by any stretch and the buddy characters are especially more fun to play as. Sheila feels much the same, while Sgt Byrd and Agent 9 have had a major overhaul in their controls which was much needed to modernise them to the standards of, say, Ratchet and Clank. Bentley, meanwhile, has a more over-the-shoulder camera angle that while more characterful does become an issue in the Crystal Islands mole minigame because he fills up like half of the screen. I also wish he could sprint by clicking one of the analog sticks because he's horrendously slow.
Another note - Motion Blur? I really hope they patch in an option to disable it. It's so over the top and it gives me fucken migraines. But it's Spyro and I've waited eighteen fucking years for this so I'll take it if that's the price I have to pay lol.

Fun fact, Spyro is top of the VG charts in the UK - outselling Fallout 76, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee.
Two of those came out the same week, which is pretty good for our purple boy
