Now that season 3 is over, it's time for a review of it as a whole. The reason I made this is because I have a lot to say about this season, even if I din't participate that much in the discussions about it. So, let's go:
The Story: The story...is pretty weak to be honest. The whole thing was more of a Soap Opera just with zombies and lot of action and the central plot was just yet another community ran by a jerk dictator and trying to destroy it. I'm pretty sure everyone is tired of hearing the whole season 1 nostalgia, but I'm sure season 1 had more plot elements than just the community plot. It was about people surviving and struggling without food, being put in complicated situations and dilemmas, siding with people whom you think are trustworthy or not and trying to gain their trust and all that. A New Frontier was really just a action movie split in 5 parts and the episodes were really too damn short to actually give a crap about the characters or the situations they are put in. Not to mention all the loose ends that weren't resolved. Like, seriously, what happened to Joan, Clint and Max if you keep them alive? They just vanish into thin air and aren't seen again. I guess they fell in the same wormhole that Christa ended up in and disappeared from the story completely. And don't get me started on the AJ plot that goes nowhere.
The characters: I honestly did not give a rat's ass about any of the characters more than I did for those from season 2. Javier is at best okay, he is not really that complex as Telltale made him out to be compared to Lee, Gabe was really just damn annoying and this is coming from someone who actually tolerated Ben and Sarah, it's hard for me to sympathize with Kate since we don't know that much about her time together with David and why she was so damn afraid of him besides shouting her and we never saw him laying a finger on her at all, Mariana was actually pretty sweet and I actually felt a bit attached her, that is till she got the Omid treatment by Telltale(another waste of good potential from a actual interesting character), David was really just a Kenny 2.0, to the point where his temper being a danger to the group was basically like in No Going Back with Kenny, Tripp is pretty bland, Eleanor...was really just there cause she was the doctor and that's it. Seriously, what was her purpose? Besides being the only medic and selling out the group to Joan and then vanishing from the beginning of the last episode after you forgive her or not? She is probably the worst character out of this season. And I feel like Conrad's personality was rewritten in episode 3 so then people would have a reason to keep him alive. Joan was pretty much a rehash of Carver except with less screentime and wasn't really a good antagonist, especially since you can just easily kill her at the end of episode 4 and if you don't, she disappears from episode 5 completely and Jesus was pretty much here to show that he and Kingdom exists and to promote the comics.
These characters could of been actually pretty great if we actually got to know them better, to learn about their early lives before the apocalypse, about their families, their struggles and all that stuff. The only characters who's pasts were shown and told were basically the Garcia's, but that's mostly because they were the main characters.
Clementine: Clem's presence was pretty much pointless. Any character could of taken her place and it wouldn't made a difference, her story should of ended in season 2 and leave us to imagine what happens to her next in the alternate endings. But no, she just had to be brought back by making all the endings worthless, toss away Kenny, Jane and Wellington like they were nothing and only be playable in flashbacks that only have a impact on the outcome of the season's climax. And none of our past choices from seasons 1 and 2 had any actual influence on her, even with the choice generator. Clem would of never shot Eli in episode 1 with the choices I made in the first two seasons. Not to mention that her whole story with trying to find AJ was left unfinished, so then Clem could get the spotlight again in a new DLC/season. Why couldn't Telltale just make her playable in the present with Javier? They've done it with Rhys and Fiona in Borderlands and the Forresters in GOT, so it couldn't been that much trouble to have them both playable at the same time. And holy hell, if people thought that her relationship with Kenny was forced, Gabentine was a lot more forced. When Gabe determinantly dies and Clem determinantly kisses him, she says that she felt alone till she met him...I'm sorry, what? She just knew this kid for like 2-3 days in comparison to her time spent with Lee, Christa, Kenny, Luke and Jane and she suddenly doesn't feel alone anymore by being with Gabe and loving him. Jesus Christ, who thought that would be a good idea.
Determinants: Conrad was pretty much the best determinant in this season, but that's only mostly because Telltale focused more on him than with the other determinants. There wasn't really any difference with Tripp and Ava's determinant scenes, only that Tripp dies a few seconds later than Ava. And Ava's determinant death?...Jesus, what was up with that?...She simply falls to her death, characters express shock for only a second and move on like nothing happened. I expected Clem to be Fixed up about it but nothing. Her death was worse than Nick and Sarah's, it was like something out of a fucking Family Guy episode, or any other cartoons with black comedy.
Choices: Even if I din't like the season that much, it did handle the choices much better than in season 2 and they actually had a impact on the season's ending, the cast din't get slaughtered like in the first two seasons and only having Clem be the last survivor and din't kill off the main protagonist who isn't Clementine for the sake of feels again. Though, knowing how the next season/DLC will go, I suspect that the endings will not matter that much like with season 2's. I won't be surprised if the Garcia's and the residents from the Richmond will be found dead if Clem goes back there.
And episode verdicts:
Ties that Bind Part 1: 5/10
Ties that Bind Part 2: 3/10
Above the Law: 7/10
Thicker Than Water: 6/10
From the Gallows: 7/10
I give this season a 5 at best. So, did I like it than season 2? Nope. Does this change my mind about season 2 at all? Not really, I think both seasons were pretty underwhelming. I honestly hope that after the next DLC/season(hopefully it will be a DLC), Telltale will be done with the Walking Dead. It had a nice run with season 1, but I feel like they are just beating a dead horse over and over again with these seasons and it would be best if they just put an end to the TWD series. I'm looking forward to a second season of GOT/Batman than another Walking Dead season.
Well, this is what I had to say. Post your own review about A New Frontier and rate it.
