EDIT: Moved from General Thread to stop it from getting cluttered up.
I started another game in Stellaris (And am loving it), this time as the "Terran Alliance," a Militaristic and Materialistic Military Republic (Think "Starship Troopers"). Motivated only by the power and wealth they can obtain, there are very few things they won't do to expand their power. At least five wars have been waged with the sole objective of annexing worlds belonging to once peaceful societies, the most notable of which was a race of fungus people calling themselves the "Tyrathian Administration." Over the last 350 years the Alliance has taken at least 75% of their territory from them, but these gains were not without strife. Integrating the new citizens of the Alliance proved to be challenging one multiple separatist movements rose up and declared a desire for independence, with one even launching a score of terrorist attacks across the occupied territory before being crushed in their ill fated uprising.
The Terran Alliance lucked out when discovering their first neighbor, the "Elaanimid Coalition," was more interested in peace than war, and in its early days the Alliance was willing to accept a non-aggression pact with the aliens. Unfortunately, the Coalition went on to become, bar none, the greatest superpower in the galaxy. Fortunately the agreements between them and the Alliance have kept them from beginning a war between each other, which humanity would surely lose. The only rival to the Coalition's might was a Federation on the other side of the galaxy composed of four separate governments that kept the peace in their quadrant. The Alliance was considering trying to rally some of the other governments against the Coalition for a while, but something changed that...
A new species, known only as "The Unbidden" appeared out of the blue with only one message to the rest of the galaxy: "Hunt." These beings, from a dimension different from our own, appeared in a particularly war-torn area of space that had been wracked with invasion (Some started by me) and civil wars for centuries. Instead of one strong Confederacy, which originally existed, they came upon its tattered remains after internal strife (Again, some likely caused by the wars I started) tore it into several smaller, and significantly weaker, factions. They destroyed them all. They couldn't be slowed down, let alone stopped, and have since obliterated at least eight civilizations and ground down the United Rethellian Suns, the largest empire on the eastern side of the galaxy, to a shadow of its former self. Their northern forces have reached the borders of the Federation and all but destroyed one of its members.
Even the Coalition, those guys I mentioned earlier? They can't do anything. Their eastern borders have been overrun and a significant portion of their military destroyed by the invaders, whose territory now spans much of the galaxy. Worse still is that The Unbidden have managed to infiltrate deep into Coalition space and claim two systems without any resistance, and will likely soon expand from those new footholds into the heart of the Coalition's territory. The only victory to have been won against The Unbidden was by me, the Terran Alliance. A new breakthrough in Battle-cruiser long range weapons gave me the edge I needed to destroy one of their fleets that was breaking through into Coalition territory, but it was a close call. I threw my entire fleet into the battle and nearly half was destroyed anyway. The battle may have turned out very differently had it not been for the unexpected last minute arrival of Coalition forces on the enemy's flank, dividing their attention long enough for my surviving vessels to finish them off.
The Galaxy is in a grim state. With trillions dead and entire civilizations reduced to ash by these creatures from the void, the Terran Alliance now faces the threat of imminent invasion by this mighty foe. The only hope of victory is a slim one: A suicide mission into the heart of enemy territory to destroy the portal that links their dimension to ours. Most of the fleet won't return, but if they fail then our extinction is assured.
