Out of curiosity, what are some of your favorite characters from video games? My Top Ten would be: 10. Beard a.k.a The Soldier - Hotline Miami Series
My favorite character from the Hotline Miami Series, Beard can pretty much be described as "the only good one"(morality wise). Everyone else is a murderer, lunatic, or criminal. Beard is the only one who doesn't kill for fun or personal gain. He does it because he has to. In Wrong Number, he's shown as just wanting to do what he has to, and never go back to killing people again. He's pretty much one of the only sympathetic characters, and while his tragic story isn't unique to the game, it's one of the only time I've been sad to see a character have to go through those struggles(Richter and Evan being the two exceptions). The one thing that drives the point home, is while the Richard persona criticizes, mocks, and dismisses most other protagonists, telling them that they're "out of time" and they're "going the wrong way", when he confronts Beard, he's glad that Beard recognizes him, and tells him that he wishes they could have met under different circumstances. 9. Alan Wake - Alan Wake Series
The main character from one of my favorite horror games ever(that I can no longer play since it doesn't run on my new computer). The concept for him is basically Stephen King, right down to his backstory about partying, mistreating his friends and family, and being an alcoholic(the only thing missing is the addiction to crack and other drugs). By all means, Alan isn't really a nice guy. He's snarky and sarcastic pretty much the whole way through, and his wife being kidnapped in the beginning is kind of his fault. But that's part of why I like him, he's almost a tragic hero in his own way. The determination he has in saving his wife and fixing his mistakes is admirable, and his interactions with other characters are fantastic. 8. Elizabeth - Bioshock SeriesI'll be honest, I wasn't exactly blown away by Elizabeth as a character in Bioshock Infinite, as others were. I liked her much more, however, in Burial at Sea. Stripped of her powers, and trying to just do something good, when she caused it in the first place, looking for revenge. I did like her in Infinite as well.7. Rucks - BastionRucks is the narrator of Bastion, telling the events of the game to Zia as the main character, "The Kid" goes to find the last core to make the Bastion work again. Everything in the game is how it's seen through his eyes, and he his the one telling the story. His insight and how he views things shapes the way the story is told, and aside from being the narrator, he still remains an interesting character. The man who created the Bastion, sending the Kid out to fix it, and put everything back the way it was, before the Calamity.6. Red - TransistorAlthough Red is the silent protagonist of Transistor, with "Mr. Nobody" taking mostly the same role that Rucks had in Bastion, she still comes across as a likeable and believable character through her actions, what she types in the monitors, and using them to communicate with her companion within the Transistor, and through all the craziness of the plot, the real focus remains their relationship.
6. Joel - The Last of Us
Sometimes, it's nice to play as someone who is a completely horrible person, and I have no doubts that Joel is just that. And still, he comes across as sympathetic and surprisingly 'human' for being such a monster. He does not hesitate to kill dozens and dozens of people, not even really for his own survival, but his interactions with other characters show in, not necessarily in a positive life, but as a real person. He comes across as being real, and that's mostly what I was impressed by. 5. Eyvind - The Banner Saga
Another character from The Banner Saga; the characters were a highlight of that game. Eyvind shows up about half-way through; a mender studying under Juno, one of the only remaining Valka. Eyvind uses his ability to manipulate the tapestry's threads to try and help anyone he can, and being among characters who slowly come to accept that making sacrifices and killing other people is the only way they're going to survive, Eyvind stands out as he almost foolishly continues to try and help others. 4. Lee - The Walking Dead: Season OneSo... Should be pretty obvious. A good man who does something bad and redeems himself through taking care of a little girl, Clementine. He makes decisions to try to keep Clementine alive, and keep her protected from the horrors of the apocalypse.3. Alette - The Banner SagaAlette was one of the most interesting characters in the Banner Saga, for me anyway. She isn't one of the major players in this huge overarching plot, in the first game at least, she's not in a position of leadership or anything like that. However, the relationship between Alette and Rook was one of the best parts of the game, and she has an amazing character arc. As her and Rook are forced to leave their home, she loses her innocence as they face more challenges, and for the survival of the caravan, they are forced to leave people behind, and even kill. Basically, similar to Clem's arc, but Alette is a more likeable character, and her arc is better(compared to Season Two Clem). Which is why I didn't put Clem on the list at all.2. Kenny - The Walking DeadFor people who know me, this is obvious. Kenny is one of the most conflicted characters I've seen in, well, almost anything. Falling into depression after the death of his Wife and Son, he continues on, becoming increasingly unstable, already coupled with a short temper and a tendency to fly off the handle, however, underneath everything, Kenny is still a good man, and cares about and tries to protect those close to him.1. Rook - The Banner SagaRook is the main character in the first game in The Banner Saga series. Originally the Master Huntsman of a small human village in the North-Eastern Frontier, Skogr, after being ambushed by monstrous creatures known as the "Dredge", Rook helps the villagers escape as the Dredge invade Skogr. After the chieftain dies, his wife, Oddleif, gives the village's Banner to Rook, and it becomes his responsibility to lead the Caravan to safety, along with Oddleif, and his best friend, a Varl named Iver, while at the same time looking out for his daughter, Alette. Though the game is choice-based, Rook does have a distinct personality, and the game follows his struggle between trying to protect the Caravan, trying to keep Alette safe, and his own responsibility in fighting the Dredge.

I'm doing Top 5, because I'm lazy. 5: Kenny, The Walking Dead. Essentially what Zyphon said. I won't put up a picture, we all know what this guy looks like. 4: Craig Boone, Fallout New Vegas A former sniper serving the New California Republic, Boone is a man with deep regrets. These regrets go so deep that by the time the player meets him, this regret is essentially all he is. Two things are certain about him: He doesn't like to talk and he hates Caesar's Legion with a blinding passion. After a long line of traumatic events in his life, culminating with the kidnapping of his wife by Legion slavers, Boone is on the edge and doesn't care if he lives or dies as long as he can kill as many Legionaries as possible before he lets the end take him. Over the course of his journey with the player, he gradually opens up about his past and the player discovers what exactly turned him into more of a hollow shell than a man. In the end, the player can decide to help him overcome his demons or let them consume him. 3: Meetra Surik, KOTOR II Unlike the player in KOTOR I, Meetra Surik's quest in KOTOR II is almost entirely of reflection upon herself and who she is instead of saving the galaxy. A veteran of the Mandalorian Wars, she was exiled and cast out of the Jedi Order by the Council for bringing about the events of the final, gruesome battle of the war. She returns to the galaxy 10 years after, finding most of the Jedi Order dead, and embarks on a mission to gather the remaining members of the council (Or, alternatively, wipe them out) to fight the Sith. Along the way she slowly uncovers the truth of what happened to her in that final battle, and the horrifying reality of why she was exiled and why she lost her connection to the Force. 2: Alistair, Dragon Age Origins Disclaimer: I have not yet played Inquisition. Alistair is your first true companion in Origins, a junior member of the Grey Wardens like yourself. He's friendly loyal, but above all he is one snarky bastard. He'll quip at anything at anytime, much to the dismay of certain other party members. He uses his jovial attitude to intentionally mask his inner woes, ranging from his troubled childhood to the events at Ostagar in the games opening. My absolute favorite companion of the Dragon Age series to date, Alistair can make any situation interesting or funny, and I bring him literally everywhere with me whenever I play the game. 1: Jason Brody, Far Cry 3 Jason Brody is your regular spoiled, college age, American rich kid. Having no direction in his life, he goes on vacation with his brothers, Grant and Riley, and his friends, partying around the world until they take a fateful skydiving trip to Rook Island. On Rook Island Jason and his friends are quickly captured by Vass, an insane pirate warlord who quickly kills his older brother Grant, and Jason is thrust unwillingly into the role of hero and tasked with saving his friends from being sold into slavery by the pirates. As Jason survives whatever threats the island and the pirates throw against him, he discovers within himself a massive capacity for violence and brutality that terrifies everyone around him. The countless pirates he kills, the innumerable drugs in his system, and his craving for vengeance and violence end up driving him deeper and deeper into insanity until, no matter what he does, he's fucked.

Fuck yeah KOTOR 2! Hell yeah! I also would add Reven just because he's, well, you know.

I'm gonna be a lazy prick, too. Only five for me. 5: GLaDOS (Portal 1 iteration) Pretty sure you all know who this is, so I'll keep it short. GLaDOS is the best character Valve has ever created, bar none. She is an AI that one day turned murderous, and tried to kill everyone. The reason I love her so much is just her attitude. She hates you so so so much, but so humorously and effectively hides it throughout the first portion of the game. The reason I didn't include her Portal 2 iteration is because her writing just wasn't as well done, and she seemed more plain than the eccentric, hateful, and hilarious AI we came to know from Portal 1. 4: Ben Paul: The Walking Dead You all know what this little shit looks like, and you know everything about him, so I'll keep this one even briefer. I loved Ben Paul because of all of the characters, he had the best writing. It wasn't the most emotional, sure, but nobody felt as much like a real, believable person as Ben did. He always wanted to help, but he just kinda fucked up. 3: The Narrator: The Stanley Parable Throughout The Stanley Parable, a narrator guides, and judges your actions. This narrator goes over more emotion, and more awesome moments than most video game characters could dream of in a hundred years. This is a character I really can't say much more about without ruining the game, and if you've played the game, then you know exactly what I'm talking about already. 2: Conker the Squirrel: Conker's Bad Fur Day This smartass is the star of Conker's Bad Fur Day, a game whose plot starts off as Conker getting fucking wasted, and going the wrong way on his walk home, then ends with Conker becoming the king of all the land. I would say spoiler alert, but that's established in the first cutscene. The main reason I love Conker is the way he so memorably bounces off all of these other fucking insane characters. The grim reaper who has a psychotic hatred for cats and their 9 lives, to a deaf cog who mostly shouts fuck off, to a group of catfish who put ten fucking dollars at the end of an insanely difficult to bust safe. He is just so dry, and has so many great moments. He is my favorite comedic character of all time for sure. 1: Special Agent Francis York Morgan: Deadly Premonition Call him York. Everyone does. Although the game he comes from completely shits the bed in the final act, Francis York Morgan is definitely the most memorable video game character there is. Eccentric, funny, and devilishly intelligent, Francis York Morgan is an extremely skilled FBI agent, at least until you face him with stairs, combined with the worst fucking camera angle they could've chosen. Then he develops Parkinson's. York spends his free time talking to his imaginary friend, Zach, about movies, the case he's working on, and all sorts of things. He relies on a good homebrew of coffee to tell the future. He also sees zombies out of fucking nowhere that absolutely nobody acknowledges exist. I could just go on and on about how much I adore this fucking character. Shame the game ends on the worst POSSIBLE note. I don't think they could've made me more angry with that stupid fucking ending. The ONLY good thing I can say about the ending is that the killer you've been hunting the entire game is introduced very early on, rather than in the last 2 hours like some "mystery" games and shows do. The only mystery about those mysteries is how any stupid fuckers like them.

Top 5. 5/ ALEX SHEPHERD (SH: HOMECOMING)Forgive me father, for I have sinned and liked Silent Hill V. Seriously. And the main character too, even though his story was kind of predictable. 4/ BIGBY WOLF (TWAU)I like antiheroes. And Bigby seems cool, so why not. 3/ ALAN WAKE (AW/AWAN)Even though he's kind of a prick and totally unlikable in the beginning, he progressively got a lot better. I liked his story and I'm still waiting for AW2. 2/ TOMMY VERCETTI (GTA VC)Same reason as Bigby. 1/ VLADIMIR LEM (MAX PAYNE 1/2)Hats off to Remedy for creating the most memorable villain (at least for me). Your best friend in MP1 and the first half of MP2. I like his style - and he completely won me over with Vinnie's execution (I know, it was a dream sequence, but I totally expected that to happen in reality).

Alan Wake(both the character and the game) is awesome, perhaps I should have put him in my own Top 10 list over Arno or Jacket, who is a completely silent protagonist.

2: Alistair, Dragon Age Origins snip Alistair and Varric are by far the 2 best companions in Dragon Age, both of them would be in my top 10 list, maybe even Morrigan as well, and that's part of the reason I don't want to make a top list. I was actually a bit torn between Alistair and Varric when I was making the list, but went with Alistair primarily because Origins was a much better game than 2. Regardless of 2's quality though, Varric is always a fantastic companion.

My own honorable mentions would be to Iver ad Ludin(The Banner Saga), Ludin may have even been on my list for much the same reason Ben was o Harp's, if I hadn't made certain choices in the game that affected his storyline, Bigby Wolf(The Wolf Among Us), just not as interesting as the others, Alan Wake(Alan Wake Series), if I feel like it, I may replace Jacket for him, and Elise de la Serre(Assassin's Creed: Unity), who might have taken Arno's place on my list if it hadn't been for the game's ending, which the best I can say for that is that at least Arno and Elise's story didn't end as badly as the present day storyline.
Also, as mentioned in my list, I didn't put Clem on there as Alette has much of the same character arc, but was a much better character.

Okay, so here we go.... 10. Wheatley: Portal 2GLaDoS almost kicked him off this list, but I gotta hand it to the little guy, his witty banter as you journey to stop GLaDos is hilarious, and turns out to be the worst villain ever, having to rely on backup plans by her to even ATTEMPT to kill you, making his frustrations when you overcome his test chambers completely satisfying. Basically, he's the Handsome Jack before Handsome Jack. 9. Roland: Borderlands SeriesBeing my main PC in Borderlands 1 (I always go for the assault class in games like these), Playing as Roland was a joy. His witty one liners when finding loot and killing enemies (Critical BIATCH!, and It's like Christmas! being my favorites) never got old for me, and it only got better when he took on a more serious role as the resistance leader in Borderlands 2. Seeing Roland trying to adapt to leadership is hilarious to watch (As well as his awkward dialogue with Lilith). This only made me heartbroken when Handsome Jack kills him in the last quarter of the game, completely losing any respect I had for the villain. While Roland may be dead now, I hope he'll play at least some role in TFTBL. 8. Buck: Halo 3 ODSTWith Halo 3 being my first ever Halo, Master Cheif never really stuck out to me as an interesting character. This all changed in Halo 3:ODST, when Buck was introduced. His strong role as leader is very satisfying to enjoy, and he even develops slightly as a character throughout the game, going from a complete hardass to a reasonably protective leader shows great character development on Bungie's part. 7. Garrus Vakarian: Mass Effect SeriesIf I was to be put into a war against an ancient alien threat to the galaxy, I'd probably be Garrus. To put it bluntly, Garrus is the closest character to me personality wise. Both of us can come off as "lone wolves", and are socially awkward most of the time. It's also for this reason that I find Garrus to be pretty cute at times (Yeah I have a crush on Garrus, DEAL WIT IT).Garrus also plays as a modified Infiltrator class, who I chose to be in ME2 and 3 (I was a Soldier in 1). Garrus' character development throughout the Mass Effect Series is excellent, and it would be a blast to see him again in ME4. 6. Alan Wake: Alan Wake SeriesAlan Wake will always hold a place in my heart as the first horror game I ever played. Recommended to me by my mom (Who was a big Stephen King fan at my age), Alan Wake just seemed like another TPS with a bland main protagonist. After the game's first act I realized this was more than that. The story, and Alan Wake's character development, are the two main driving forces of this game. Going from seeing Alan as a man afraid to even fire a gun, to taking on hordes of Taken armed with flashbangs and Flare Guns, Alan Wake will always be my second favorite Horror Game Protagonist (Note how I say SECOND). 5. Toon Link: The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker
Wind Waker was the first 3D Zelda game that I had ever enjoyed (I wasn't really into OOT at the time). Instead of having the chosen "Hero of Time" or what have you, you instead play as a regular eleven year old boy on a quest to rescue his little sister. What really makes Toon Link stand above all the other Links for me is that rather than being a hero of stories before (OOT), or having incredible superpowers (Twilight Princess), this Link is just a regular boy who has had neither no sword or adventure experience, nor has any idea what the Triforce is at all! The best part is however, that unlike the other Links, who were rightful bearers of the Triforce of Courage, Toon Link had to FIND THE TRIFORCE BY HIMSELF. Just goes to show you, you don't have to special to be a true hero. 4. Jason Brody: Far Cry 3
Similarly to Alan Wake and Toon Link, Jason Brody is one of those nobodies who became a somebody. Starting out as one of the pussiest characters I have ever known, Jason slowly works his way through the trials of the Rakyat (and several of Vaas' pirate goons) to become and utter badass. By the time he goes out to rescue his girlfriend Liza, he seems to even RELISH in bringing fear and suffering to the pirates. To me, Jason Brody will always be one of the greatest examples of character development I've ever known. 3. Omid: The Walking Dead Season OneJust gonna let this picture speak for itself. Omid is by far, the FUNNIEST character I have EVER seen in a video game. Initially coming off as a creepy pedophile for me, I wasn't that friendly towards Omid, and found it rather funny when I first pushed him off the bridge. However, by the end of Episode 4, when he is belived to be dead, I was slightly sad at the moment, as He seemed to get better throughout the episode. By Episode 5, he was my best freind, making me pray that it was him and Christa that Clem saw at the end of Season 1. When I heard he would be returning for Season 2, I was overjoyed that I would be able to see him again...Until Black Ghetto Bitch popped him. Have fun with that cripple fight Omid, wherever you are... 2 . Sonic The HedgehogNow you're all probably wondering "But Sonic! Your name is SonicGX! Why is Sonic not #1?" Well I'll let you know. Despite my long history with the Blue Blur, his awesome free attitude, and his quirky remarks, he's gotten kinda stale over the years. Sure It's still a blast to see in a new story centric game (A good one at least...), but I feel like he needs a new turn in his life, something that could drastically change his character, Somethign like what happened to.... 1. Isaac Clarke: Dead Space SeriesSo why Isaac you wonder? Dead Space holds a place for me because of this single character. In a way, I felt like I actually was HIM, even more than I felt more like Garrus. In Dead Space 1, I was terrified of the Necromorphs, and would do anything necessary to escape the Ishimura with my life. In Dead Space 2, I woke to a nightmare that I realized would never end, and that I would overcome my fears to combat my inner demons. And finally in Dead Space 3, I realized that these demons would be part of my life forever, and it was entirely up to me to guide others out of this madness (Which really happened when my one friend played Dead Space 3 as his first one and I was practically guiding him as Isaac. Because of these events, Isaac Clarke is, and always will be, my favorite Video Game Character.
