lol even looking at the key art, does anyone care about Sparr, Ollie, and the stealth guy? Really? Those are the characters you chose to put in the key art. okay. I think there's a big disconnect over what characters Stoic cares about, and what characters the fans care about, and that's maybe my biggest concern. I really like Olli, personally. He had the best scene in BS2. The Alette play was amazing. I also used the stealth guy now and then. I care about him as much as any of my less important units. But yeah it should've been Ludin, and Ivar, and Bolverks first mate, or something like that.

Oli is the drunk axe-throwing guy who randomly joins the Ravens and occasionally does stupid stuff. I guess they wanted characters that are part of Juno's group on the kay art, since Juno and Eyvind are the two big characters there, but then it kinda just highlights the problem of Juno's group not really having many interesting characters. Juno, Eyvind, Folka, Iver, and Ekkil are the only interesting characters, and I guess they couldn't have Iver since he was already in the key art for Banner Saga 1, and Ekkil is a highly determinant character. At least Sparr is pretty well characterized, he introduces all of the God Stones Bolverk's caravan came across and had a history with Bolverk that was pretty interesting, but I don't even remember the stealth guys name and I really don't think anyone cares that much about the drunk comic relief.

I wonder if the narrator in all of these trailers is supposed to be Juno, or if it's just some random narrator. If it's Juno, then i'm a little disappointed they're not using an Icelandic voice actor like they did in Banner Saga 2. Yeah, it did mean that most of the voice acting was kinda awkward, but it felt sorta authentic, y'know?

Got the game.
It certainly delivers on just more of the branching story/strategy combat/resource management gameplay of the Banner Saga. The writing is pretty good, although my one big complaint is this is maybe the clumsiest attempt at world-building I've ever seen. The world of The Banner Saga feels like a place I know and can learn more about. The world of Ash of Gods is just a mess of confusing names and events. It gives you very little context for pretty much any of what happens. It's got a map like Banner Saga, but it's really not that good. It marks every single possible place you can go to- which is a lot- meaning you never know what's important lore or just a random watchtower or tavern. Even the seemingly important stuff has no lore. So, in big letters on the map, "Kingdom of Odlalah". What does it say when I click on it? "One of the five Kingdoms of Berkanan". Great, really cleared things up there Ash of Gods.
It's also a little buggy and I don't like having to rely on autosaves. I mean, it lets you reload old saves even going back to the beginning of the game like Banner Saga does, so then why not let me manually save sometimes instead of having to rely on checkpoint spaced out tens of minutes apart? As for the buggy: I got to a town after having to travel two days without Strixes(gems that protect you from the plague), so pretty much all of my people were injured. Of course, first stop was the merchant to buy more Strixes, and then a rested for a day. Only after this do I discover that there was a way to heal my party without using Strixes in this town. Since it wasn't a major choice or anything, I don't have a problem with reloading my save, but for some reason when I reload to the beginning of entering the town, it forgot that I fought a battle to get into the town, so I reloaded with less Strixes and gold than I had before. Decided to reload to the save before that save, but the last save before that was at the beginning of the chapter. So, because it couldn't probably reload the one save, I have to choose between wasting some strixes, losing some strixes and gold, or wasting my time. This choice because of a bug... yeah, not a fan.
The combat is pretty cool, more complicated I'd say than Banner Saga's, but weirdly easier because positioning isn't as big of a deal. There's also an element of randomness to it because there's not really a turn order, which I'm not a huge fan of.
The animation went for more of a quantity over quality thing, so there's a lot more of it, but it doesn't look nearly as good. I'm fine with this, honestly, because it's overall still pretty good.
So overall... it is sort of, in style at least, a Banner Saga ripoff, but I'm fine with that bc I love The Banner Saga. The writing isn't as good as Banner Saga's, but it's good enough that I want to keep playing.
Last note: the perma-death for all characters thing is... interesting, but I've gotta assume that it doesn't handle it well if one of the main characters actually does die.
