Oh yeah, and I can't help but be a little disappointed that Brent Spiner doesn't look more like Sidney, but honestly, I don't think there's any human being on planet earth that looked like Sidney. Really, his design in the comics reminds me a lot of Dishonored's art style, how all of the characters had very exaggerated features, almost like caricatures. Sidney looks a bit like that in the comics, and it really works for the comics... but, yeah, no real person looks like that.

Still haven't seen episode 2 yet because I don't have cinemax. Is there anywhere else I can watch it? No, I guess it's not going to be up on HBOGO. :/ I mean, you could always try to find it online but that's a gamble because I've seen a few sites that have it online but they seem really shady. Aside from that... yeah. They get to do a lot of stuff since it's on Cinemax, but yeah, not everyone has cinemax.

Outcast isn't gonna be on HBO NOW. I'll wait until the entire season finishes and just binge watch it.

My review of Episode 2: Okay, so I’m going to forgo a real format here and probably just write about the episode a whole lot. I’ll preface it with a little prelude/synopsis thing here and then put up a “read more” for my spoiler-y review. Also, sorry this is late.
So, general thoughts: another awesome episode, and one that gives me a lot of hope for the series because it definitely shows that Outcast can do episodes that deviate from the comics and they can be just as good as the episodes that adhere strictly to the comics. It’s also cementing Kyle as being a far better character in the show than in the comics.
Unfortunately, it’s also the episode that shows that certain things that deviate from the comics…. I’m just going to to like them. Not because it’s bad, but because it’s different, and I, personally, just like how things are in the comics more.
So, without further ado, I get to act as if this is any sort of real “review” for a few minutes:
Firstly, I want to talk about the flashbacks, and how much I loved them. One of my biggest worries for the show was that it would rely too much on flashbacks, and while there certainly are a lot more than in the comics, they work kind of in a similar way to the comics; little flashes(which only makes sense, right? It’s a flashback. They really shouldn’t be so prolonged like they are in most shows).
And honestly, I get why they did it. One of the things Kirkman talked about a lot leading up to the show was how things changed because TV is a different medium. And yeah, these things work a lot better because it’s in a visual medium now.
I also just love how they’re shot. The sudden flashes and slow fades working at different times. Memories that shock Kyle and times when he’s losing himself in his memories. The contrast between the desaturated and super-saturated good and back memories. And the subtlety. I honestly didn’t notice the whole thing with Kyle’s bike until the second time I watched the episode.
And I loved the emotional core of this episode… it really feels like there’s a lot of heart to it. Kyle’s desperation to try and save his mother…. I mean, I like the bitter, hurt Kyle from the comics, too, but this is a nice change of pace. Kyle getting angry and overreacting because he thinks his mom should be taken care of better as opposed to Kyle still feeling like his mother his hurting her from the bed she’s in. It just works better, it’s more relatable, and there’s more heart to it. It’s really the core of the episode, and that worked.
And on to something I… didn’t like quiet as much… Anderson. He is very much a “fire and brimstone” type preacher and… there’s a lot of intensity there, getting the people riled up, having them actively talk about demons and dark forces because he’s on a crusade. Philip Glenister is fantastic, and he does(as Glenister said in an interview), act like a rockstar on the pulpit. And I don’t like that.
There’s nothing wrong with it. It’s a new take on the character from the comics, Philip Glenister is incredible, it fits within the story and in a lot furthers the idea of the small, close-knit, very religious town… There’s a lot of good things about this new take on the character. It’s just that, personally, I prefer Anderson in the comics.
And you know, I think that’s fair. I like Kyle more in the show, when someone might hate Fugit’s version of Kyle(don’t know who that person could be, but hey, it could be someone)… The show has different takes on the characters, and for me, most of it works, and I even like them better than in the comics… just, not Anderson.
Honestly, I see a bit of a reversal in how they’re handling Kyle and Anderson. In the comics, Anderson is definitely more… heart-felt, more human and relatable, and definitely… well, not mellow, but not quiet so fierce in his intensity. He’s thoughtful; not quiet so rash. And this is countered by Kyle’s intensity. Kyle is bitter, hurt, and angry. He takes action, he questions, and… he really does take charge in their relationship(to some degree). In the show, Anderson is the intense one… Kyle is more thoughtful, a lot less “in your face”. So…. that’s interesting, and it’s essentially reversed my views on the characters for the show.
Just a few other things:
The woods are creepy, and I like that Mark has his own little sub-plot, and also that Giles is getting some screentime. The show has room to flesh out other characters, and it’s doing that. I mean, I don’t really know what’s up with the crucified raccoons in the woods…. but, I’m anxious to see.
Brent Spiner as Sidney was great, but I can’t help but feel a little disappointed that he doesn’t look more like the character… I mean, I can’t really think of anyone who looks like Sidney, but, still…. Regardless, I can’t wait to see what happens with Brent Spiner’s version of Sidney as he becomes more important to the show.

Scott Porter was fantastic in Episode 4, and it was really interesting to see him play the villain.

My review from tumblr for Episode 3: Outcast, Episode 3: All Alone Now, Review
Sorry that I’m not on top of these. I spend quite some time getting my thoughts together, and just trying to work out what in each episode I like or didn’t like as part of this adaptation of a comic series that I absolutely adore. That, and I’m a bit lazy.
This Episode was very… interesting, to say the least. There’s a lot of stuff that I’m still just not quite sure on. It did things pretty differently to the comic, and…. I don’t necessarily think I can say if it was better or worse, it’s just different. Hard to say if I personally liked it more or not.
So I think I want to just… get right to the meat of what I mean, and that has to do with Blake Morrow(keeping the comic’s spelling of his name). Firstly, I do want to say that I loved Lee Tergensen’s performance(I also really like him as Beecher in Oz). However… it really was different to how the character was presented in the comics.
Lee Tergensen really did bring a sort of… manic energy, and even dark humor to the character. He was really intense and sort of in-your-face… whereas Blake in the comics was creepy because he seemed… laid back. Entirely at ease with his situation, as if he didn’t have a care in the world. In some ways, he seems like the complete opposite of Tergensen’s take on the character. And I don’t really know how to feel about that. He was an entertaining character to have on screen… but I think he lost a lot of what made him creepy in the transition to TV.
At first I also wasn’t a fan of the straight-cut to Anderson and Kyle headed to the prison… but I can live with that, I guess. Not much was lost, and we got… a bit more on Anderson’s relationship with his son in a way that fits Glenister’s version of the character.
By that I mean… In the comics, we see Anderson’s phone calls to his son, we don’t really see that freakout on the road. The phone calls fit Anderson in the comics, and seeing Anderson completely lose his cool fits the character on the show. I’m not going to talk anymore on how I don’t like the Show’s version of the character as much as the comic’s, I’ve done that at length before. (I do have to mention though how Anderson barely looked for the picture with his son because that really did bother me) Anyway, I liked J.R. Bourne as Luke Masters. He was good, and I think I’ll jump ahead and mentioned now(since I don’t have much to say about his performance) how I really did like how Kyle seemed to relate to him.
One thing I’ve always said of Kyle in the comics is that he’s selfish. At least to start with. He isn’t doing any of this to help people, only to protect his family and fix his life. The show made his motivations so much clearer, which I actually like because I feel like now it will be much more satisfying to see him finally make that transition to trying to help everyone. But aside from that…. I like how it seems as if the reason Kyle stays is because he sees something of himself in Luke. He sees a man who’s life has also been ruined by these things, and who has no other choice but to believe in the impossible. Really liked that.
Something I’m not sure I liked as much, but at least seemed to fit the Show’s version of Blake, is how Kyle really did seem to be negotiating with Blake, trying to get information out of him. Just…. the stakes didn’t seem very high, with Anderson just sitting in the back acting like he knew everything…. I don’t know, I didn’t feel like there were really any stakes, as opposed to in the comics, which went straight to a very frantic exorcism scene.
And speaking about that…. Why does Kyle just decide that Blake can’t be saved? They barely tried. Now, I know in the comics it’s because they’re kicked out and won’t get another shot at saving him… but that’s not the case in the show…. they just give up. Then again, I do have a feeling that Blake might show up again at some point because of that scene between him and Luke near the end. Which, I really enjoyed.
Last thing about Kyle and Anderson, I do like how Anderson’s jealousy/envy was touched upon, how he gave up his family and yet he has no power. I mean, again, this is very much something that works for Glenister’s version of the character. Wouldn’t really have fit in the comics. But just that scene of Blake yelling “YOUR TOUCH. DOES. NOTHING!”. Very good stuff for the show.
Last thing that I really liked is how this time around, Megan is at the center of the storyline with Donnie. Not Kyle. Not Mark. Megan is at the heart of this, because Donnie is her monster, her demon to deal with. I liked that. Seeing how just the thought of him is messing with her head, and then her taking action, trying to find out why he’s there. Good stuff. I really love Wrenn Schmidt as Megan, and just everything about the Show’s version of the character as opposed to the comics. (Oh, and I loved the scene that kept switching back to Megan and Mark as he collected all of the evidence at that creepy trailer out in the woods).
Overall, another excellent episode… It’s just… you know, some of this stuff I love, and some of it I just can’t help but feel a little bit of disappointment that it wasn’t adapted…. not better, just, I’m having some trouble adjusting to some of the differences.
