Outcast is the newest series from Robert Kirkman, creator of Thief of Thieves, Invincible, and of course, The Walking Dead. Issue #1: A Darkness Surrounds Him(I guess named issues are a thing now) came out a couple days ago, and a TV Show is already in development for CineMax(I think). The series follows Kyle Barnes, a man who has been plagued by demonic possession his entire life. Demons have been trying to hurt him through the people he loves his entire life, and he has no idea why, until he moves back to his hometown in West Virginia and talks to Reverend Anderson, who requests Kyle's help in dealing with a boy, Joshua, who has been possessed by a particularly strong demon. The Reverend believes that Kyle has a gift, and in dealing with the demon, it leads Kyle on a quest for answers, so he can finally stop the forces trying to hurt him. So basically, it is absolutely amazing in every single way. The artwork is FANTASTIC, it has a very distinct feel to it, and there is huge contrast between normal moments, and the supernatural ones. It looks incredible in it's one strange, unnerving way, and it's really unique. It's Robert Kirkman, so... I don't really need to say much about the quality of the story, it's amazing, as always with Kirkman, but it has a very different feel from Walking Dead, and in fact, I think that even if it doesn't necessarily become more popular than Walking Dead(which it's looking likely that it might), it could very well be better than Walking Dead in it's own right. It's very strange and unnerving, and just by the first issue, I'm already expecting great things form this series. Here's the first two pages. I don't think it's spoilery enoguh to require a tag, as it doesn't show much of anything, expect perhaps display the incredibly artwork.

Wow, From The Darkness It Watches was great. Not nearly as action packed, but still good. Got to see more of Kyle's past, a mysterious Stranger showed up(two technically, but one wasn't nearly as mysterious), and Kyle's relationship with Mark and his mother were explored upon more. For those here who aren't reading this series yet, you're fucking up big time. This could be as big as Walking Dead. Bigger even. It's got a lot of potential. I'm interested about Mark. It seems that him and Kyle are on the same wavelength(as soon as Kyle told Mark the guy he was beating up was Donnie, Mark just joined in on beating the shit out of him), but Mark is... well, more confused than anything else regarding what he thinks Kyle did to his wife and daughter.
It seems that, judging by the cover, we'll be learning more about what that was next issue. I assume that his wife, Allison, was possessed by a demon(the same with his mother), and then tried to kill their daughter. Kyle expelled the demon, but to the outside observer, it just looks like Kyle, a decent guy, snapped for whatever reason, beat up his wife, and nearly killed his daughter.
Also... the Devil is in town? Interesting. Can't wait for the next issue.

WOW.Only three issues in, and I can say with complete confidence that Outcast IS better than The Walking Dead. right off the bat I like the characters more, the art style is so amazing and fitting to the series, it's really unique, and the way they do horror in this... Just, wow. I was really unsure about how that would work out when I first heard about the series, but they've done it incredibly well. The first issue was hard to beat, from the opening pages(up top), and later during the exorcism, the demon, Joshua's haunting smile, the first issue was legitimately scary and wonderfully creepy. Issue #3 shows that that was not a fluke. The way Paul Azaceta draws the Possessed is... unnerving. And the colors are fantastic. As for all the characters, the dialogue, the story. Well, it's Kirkman, so yeah, as you would expect, it's absolutely amazing. I really like the Reverend, he's probably my favorite character so far, and all of his speeches are very well written. He doesn't come off as any kind of cliche, or trying too hard to be different, he's just unique, and when writing a reverend into a story about demon possesion, I imagine that must be kind of hard to do.
I like a lot of the little things, part of this is the way it's drawn. In comics, it's hard to display emotion, you're stuck with one face for just one panel, and then a whole bunch of text. Azaceta finds a way around this, using smaller, "mini" panels over other panels, or between them. It's hard to explain, but he shows a range of emotions this way, and unlike a lot of comics, he manages to display the characters' emotions almost perfectly.
I also like a lot of smaller touches in the story, glimpses into the characters lives. For example, in this issue, Kyle talks to a neighbor. This neighbor invites Kyle over all the time for lunch, and Kyle always says no, so he's shocked when Kyle says yes. They have a conversation, and... well, it's character development done right. Kind of like with Kyle talk with Mark last issue. What they're trying to get across isn't thrown in your face or anything like that. Its just a normal conversation, but it's not pointless. What they want you to learn about the character is there, but it's not thrown in your face, and it feels natural.
As for actual major events happening in this issue. more Possessed biting people's tongues out, the devil(I think?) is still around... saving children from people texting while driving? I can't figure this Stranger out, but I still think he's got to be bad...
And now this Detective, Luke, wanting to talk to Kyle. I can only assume about his girlfriend/wife having been murdered by her lover(?). But then... How does this guy know Kyle, and how does he know that the killer was possessed? Thankfully, I got this a little late, and won't have to wait for this months issue.

I read the first issue and found it really boring. Didn't like it. I'll hold on to my copy though, it's a first print, and I'll sell it in a few years.

There wasn't that much characterization in issue 1, frankly. (At least in my opinion). I found all the drawings to be a tad too dark for my poor eyes, as well. But most importantly, the story didn't 'catch me'. I wasn't fascinated by it, tbh, it was hard to read through the first issue, because it felt more like a short story and less like a series. I'll guess I'll get the trade paperback volume 1 anyway and try it out again in a few months.

I found there to be quite a lot of characterization/character building in just the first issue, and I really like the art. As for the story not catching your interest, I suppose that differs from person to person. For me, it really caught my interest. Certain things do. I'm really enjoying it so far, more so than I ever enjoyed The Walking Dead.

Honestly, I've read the first Issue maybe a week ago, I cannot recall the name of any of the characters and I couldn't tell you one single character trait of any person whatsoever. Maybe the protagonist, 'In pain', would be my character trait. I'm reading TWD since I'm 13, started back in 2005, so I'm emotionally connected on a level.. I'll probably never stop reading it. Just like One Piece. Loved nearly every TWD issue so far.
