By the way, how exactly does Envy embody Envy? He just kinda fucks shit up. Sure he can disguise himself, but he doesn't really every want to. He spends most of his time as Envy, not soldier 336, or whatever. If he were really envy, he would spend his time dressing up as his father, or trying to find a way to overrule him. He was envious of humans. He's a small, pathetic creature who masquerades as humans and fucks shit up for them out of spite. I guess you can describe his primary motivation as more "schadenfreude" than envy (schadenfreude being joy at the misery of others, envy being misery at the joy of others). It's hard to pinpoint an exact moment. I think it deviated from the manga somewhere after the introduction of Greed. After that, it seemed like they made some really odd plot twists and had to contort themselves a bit to try to explain them and never really quite did. Also, watch this:

Two of those got me to grin really stupidly.
"THIS IS GROUND CONTROL TO MAJOR TOM!"
"Grandma's making soup tonight."
"FUCK YEAH.

Man, I loved the re-watch. Pretty much the only problem with Brotherhood is the pacing. They left some scenes out from the original manga that I would've liked for them to keep. Also, Greed's introduction was way too quick.
I forgot how much I loved this scene.

It's just the most satisfying roaring rampage of revenge ever. Every sting of pain is just so goddamn well-deserved.

Envy didn't just kill Hughes, he also shot an innocent child which made two nations turn against each other prompting a civil war.
You're right in that it was extremely satisfying.

I like how by the end, they don't even kill him. They just destroy every fiber of his being and pity him into killing himself out of sheer humiliation.

Sorry for bumping this, but I just met Vic Mignogna (voice of Ed) today at Denver Comic Con.
Nicest guy ever. He signed my Brotherhood DVD and asked me if I preferred the original series or Brotherhood.

I watched the series. It was pretty good. I want to watch Brotherhood soon. As a warning: the first...15 or so episodes of Brotherhood are probably going to be a bit of a drag, seeing as how they're pretty much just rushed retelling of the first half of the original series. Stick with it. It definitely gets more interesting after that.

I liked the tone and art of the original series more. That opening sequence of their human transmutation was really well-directed and the music was fantastic (Bratja particularly stands out).

Eh, I don't feel anything when I remember the original series. It just had a really darker tone, especially towards the latter half of the series. Many characters story arcs ended abruptly, when they were more fleshed out in Brotherhood. Don't get me wrong, the 2003 series was still entertaining to watch, but I just liked the overall feel of Brotherhood better.
