This is easily one of my Top 5 Favorites of all time. I've been taking it easy for the most part, splicing up the story missions with hunting trips and gambling binges in between with the odd stranger mission added in for flavor. I almost feel like an actual resident of Valentine. I've spent so much time selling pelts and meat to the butcher, drinking at the saloon, and dealing cards at the poker table that every NPC in that town must recognize me. And it doesn't feel urgent to do the story missions (Most of them, at least) since the only main goal so far is "Get money for the gang" and while the story missions help out with that immensely they left it open enough to allow the player to mess around and take in the world. A lot of the money I earned went toward buying a pair of silver Schofield revolvers, a fancy bandoleer, and a good quality gunbelt and holster. I'm a high class gunslinger now. I also met that homeless veteran TC talked about, Mickey, and he's my favorite NPC in Valentine. He has no bearing on the story he's just a poor man who lost his friends, his arm, and his mind in the Civil War and desperately wants a friend. Each time I ride into town I'm on the lookout for him and I'll talk to him, give him money, whatever he wants. He's a bit strange but being his friend is just so wholesome. He's part of the reason I like Valentine so much. I just started Chapter 3, so spoilers abound if you haven't gotten that far yet: Getting run out of Valentine was like a knife in the gut. I loved that town, and it felt badass walking down the street with a six shooter in each hand, blasting lawmen as they rushed from the buildings, but that town had become the central fixture of the game for me. Now we just got down into Louisiana, or "Lemoyne" in the game and I'm more than a bit sad. It has more green than the rugged Oklahoma-esque landscape of New Hanover but it just isn't the same. How's Mickey getting on now that his only friend had to high tail it down South? I hope he's doing okay.

Jesus Christ this game is long, I've been playing flat out doing shit loads of missions and I'm still on chapter 3. Also side note I finally cut Arthur's Jesus hair and had him lookin like Walter White for a bit, was a good time. He's no longer bald tho. Also also if you want a magnificent beard fast buy hair tonic, apparently it stacks like 3 times and you'll look like a hobo in 2 hours.

So I just tried to surrender to the law after they told me to surrender after I killed some raiders, but then they started shooting me even though I was trying to surrender, and I'm not sure whether to call this an annoying glitch or an extra immersive bit of realism

Just beat chapter 3, shits picking up, genuinely shocking moment in there like holy shit. Starting to like most of the gang too, which is a first for a Rockstar game, only other characters out of literally any of their games I particularly liked were Lamar, John Marston and Michael De Santa (that was his name right? Can genuinely barely remember), and Arthur's a fuckin' great protagonist, he works no matter if you play like a dick or honorably (well as honorably as you can lol) and is fairly likable despite being a massive dick.

I like the gang, for the most part. Hosea is like your cool, chilled out uncle, while Uncle is like your lazy, jolly, drunk uncle. I didn't know Uncle would be in this but seeing him was a wonderful surprise. I liked him in RDR1, despite his slothful alcoholism.
I even like Javier and Bill. Javier seems like a decent guy, for a violent outlaw (In a group full of violent outlaws) and Bill... well, he's just like he was in RDR1. Loud, dumb, mean, and arrogant. But he's an ally now so it's kind of endearing when everyone else acknowledges that and treats him accordingly, like the stupid little brother you don't like to hang out with but he's still your family.
What they did with John was interesting. I won't talk about his portrayal outside of spoiler tags because it caught me by surprise but it certainly intrigues me. I didn't see it coming.
I'm currently throwing around the idea of a big hunting trip up north, practice getting perfect pelts, maybe hunt a legendary animal or two. It would take me out of Lemoyne and into, I dunno, Ambarino or some shit but it might be nice to get away from the gang for a while and practice my tracking. I'm still undecided. I do like Lemoyne though. Beautiful landscape. Still haven't done much in Chapter 3.

Also, PROTIP: You can draw your gun directly into Dead Eye. Just gently hold the right trigger while your pistol is holstered, just like in the duels, and when you press it down the rest of the way Arthur will immediately activate Dead Eye as it leaves the holster and give you a decent chance if you're outnumbered. I was shot up more than once early one when confronted by half a dozen gunmen and that trick would have saved my life.

Jesus, I'm still at the beginning of chapter 2. Need to start making some headway.
Not sure I like the added attention they give your horse. If I wanted to cater to an animal's needs all day I'd just get a pet.

I went around Antagonizing people in the camp for fun and it took like 15 minutes but Bill eventually knocked me out. Also, I can never for the life of me find John in the camp. What the fuck is he doing all of the time?

What the fuck is he doing all of the time? After doing an amount of story missions with him he goes off to do something that takes him far from the camp for a while, and Arthur thinks it's stupid. He still isn't back in my game.

I've just started chapter 5 now, and I'm starting to wish I had replayed RDR1 before this. You don't really NEED to remember anything from 1, but I'm finding myself having moments like "This Javier guy is really cool. Shit, I can't remember what he did in RDR1" and "What did Bill do in 1 again?"

I know you arrest or murder Javier in RDR, but what does he actually do in that game again? All I remember him doing is just trying to run from John. The guy you replace him with was a bigger douche than Javi was.
