Ok, since Tormunds wants the other thread to be for non-spoiler pre-discussion, spoiler talk about the returning character will go here.
So I know some people were thinking that Lily was going to be the leader of the raiders, but if they took Minnie and Sophie for sex slave purposes like it seems might've been the case, then I really don't think she could be their leader. She wasn't evil, and while a lot obviously could've happened since Season One, I don't think there's anything that could justify her being okay with that. So, I'm thinking either we're wrong about why the raiders wanted Minnie and Sophie, or Lily isn't part of their group.
In which case, if Lily isn't part of their group, I think we might see some power struggle over Ericson's between Clem and Lily. As in, Lily, being an adult, will naturally try and take charge. Honestly, that might be a more compelling storyline than Lily just straight up being a villain.

I really liked Lily's arc in S1, whatever she's doing, I'm excited to see her again. But as long as this is discussion is about returning characters, if this season ends without Clem finding Christa, I'm gonna be really disappointed.

Honestly, I kinda doubt we'll find Christa.

I feel like it'll be really interesting depending on how they pull it off. Like, it's been nine years and Clementine knew Lilly for three months when she was eight years old, so she might not even recognise her but Lilly will instantly recognise Clementine because of the hat and everything (unless she loses the hat again at some point). I expect Clementine will recognise Lilly because the player does, and it would cause some serious dissonance if Clementine and the player weren't on the same page.
Of course this means that there's a very low chance (aka 0%) that Christa/Bonnie/Mike/Arvo will appear in this season, but to be honest I prefer that it's Lilly. Her characterisation presents the best opportunities story wise as Christa would just be another ally and Mike/Arvo were almost non-entities in terms of character.
Plus this is the final season, so I think it's fitting to bookend it with the final returning major character being probably the first one who went missing.

The other mentioned characters didnt have near as much an impact as Lilly and the player likely only cares about season 1 characters.

I wouldn't even be surprised if the other returning character was Arvo. We learn Mike died randomly and Bonnie was determinant so she's not coming back. And Christa will probably not show up. I just doubt it.

I think it'll be interesting for Lily to kind of want to help Clem and the others(bc, again, I don't think she'll be with the raiders seeing as they're the ones who too Sophie and Minnie for almost certainly very bad reasons), but being not welcome, or for there to be kind of a conflict between her wanting to take charge because she's the adult, but the rest of the kids backing up Clem because they trust her and she's the most capable one. I just think that'll be a more interesting dynamic than her being a straight-up villain or ally.
