I'm really, really bored. Don't have enough for a list so I'll just talk about them. Though, I will say in general, this is kinda in order from least favorite to favorite.
So Denis Villenueve just kinda came outta nowhere, right? Like, I think he's got a couple significant movies before Arrival, but really it was just Arrival which was fucking incredible and emotional and just all around amazing, and then straight to Blade Runner 2049, one of my favorite movies of all time. I can't wait to see more sci-fi films from this guy. Personally, I'd love to see him adapt Binti by Nnedi Okorafor, and I think he'd be an incredible choice to do Vaster Than Empires and More Slow by Ursula K. LeGuin justice. Honestly, this guy is just incredible.
Then there's Nicolas Winding Refn, and I've really gotta go through the rest of his filmography. The Pusher movies, Valhalla Rising, and the Neon Demon. But of the two movies I've seen, Drive and Only God Forgives, both are in my Top 10 favorite movies of all time. I think Refn is a master of visual storytelling. Not just visuals, but utilizing action and symbols to tell a story outside of characters, dialogue, and even plot. Hell, the plot of Only God Forgives barely even matters, it's just there to give the story some sense of momentum/a framing device. The whole point of the plot is to be ignored, which is super ballsy. And Drive is just... a joy. Like, that movie is half romantic indie movie, half Hotline Miami... and that's just... kinda incredible.
My absolute favorites have got to be The Wachowskis though. Not only are they a master of action, but they can tell incredibly sincere and heartfelt stories with some of my favorite characters in cinema and television with a huge amount of skill. Cloud Atlas is honestly just... incredible. Tied with Blade Runner 2049 as one of my favorite movies of all time. V for Vendetta, also incredible. Just so dark and exciting and emotional.. And Sense8, of course, is just one of my favorite stories period. They do these stories with big hearts and just... big everything, and it's fucking awesome. Hell yeah.
Honorable mention to Damien Chazelle, but I've only seen La La Land. I really want to see Whiplash, I'm excited for The First Man and The Eddy. Once I see more from him, I'll be confident to include him as number 4.
Number 5 is probably... David Fincher? Edgar Wright? Not sure tbh. There's a lot of good ones.
