What are some of your favorite TV intros? Because I grew up in the golden age of cartoons, it would be literally impossible for me to compile a top 50, never mind a top 10 or 15, so I'll refrain from including any. You guys are more than welcome to. I'm going to rank mine because I like a challenge and just throwing some against the wall all willy-nilly is such a cop out.
So, here's my top 15.
HONORABLE MENTION: Firefly. The fact that no one on YouTube has uploaded the actual intro is MIND BOTTLING. This should crack my top 15, but since I just got into the show now I'd feel like a phony.
#15: Ballers. By all means, not a great show. This song bangs though.
#14: Freaks and Geeks. Look at that lineup. So much star power. So much awkwardness. That this show didn't get past season 1 is an all-time howler.
#13: Bloodline. Amazingly atmospheric. Both the song and the visuals flow together so well and accurate capture the storminess of the family drama.
#12: House of Cards. The shots of D.C. are just too much. This intro has my rapt attention each time I watch an episode.
#11: The Wire. Yup, I'm doing something sacreligious. I'm putting The Wire's intro outside of my top 10. I don't have any excuse other than I watch so much TV and see so many quality intros that I love that it's highly competitive.
#10: Sons of Anarchy. This is actually a bigger snub that The Wire for me. I was a huge Sons of Anarchy guy. Whenever I watched, I cocked the shotgun on cue every time it happened in the intro. Sorry, Sons.
#9: You're the Worst. Somethings you just love for the simplicity of it. This is one of these cases. Also, really weird, but whenever I'm watching the show and the intro comes on, I get goosebumps. Bizarre.
#8: Rescue Me. Three straight FX shows. This show/intro was a staple in my daily lunch life at college. Everyday I'd fill my tray up with food, get a table off in a corner and watch Rescue Me on my iPod. And that's the story of how I got fat.
#7: Hell on Wheels. Yeah! Hell on fucking Wheels! I love this intro. Short, sweet, rough and tough as fuck, and right to the point.
#6: Six Feet Under. Absolutely kills me not to include this in my top 5. As a whole, Six Feet Under is the most underappreciated show in TV history. When you think of HBO, you think of The Wire, The Sopranos and Game of Thrones. But Six Feet Under deserves to sit right with those guys. I would put Six Feet Under right up against The Wire and not bat an eyelash, that's how good it was. Not to mention the fact that it had quite possibly the best finale ever. As for the intro, I've never seen anything like it. It's so grim, yet uniquely beautiful.
#5: Vikings. The poor man's Game of Thrones intro. It's nearly as effective. Another big time goosebumps intro. One of my favorite intros, currently.
#4: BoJack Horseman. Not only is BoJack Horseman the best Netflix original show (yeah, I said it), it's also the best intro of any Netflix show. If you don't love the music in that intro, you're probably dead inside.
#3: The Leftovers (season 2). I liked the intro to The Leftovers in season 1. It was tremendously heavy and moody, but good. Then they COMPLETELY reworked the intro for season 2 to go WAYYYYYY more upbeat (yet more darkly fucked up when you think about it). So many people hated it because it was such a jarring shift. I fucking LOVED it. L-O-V-E-D it.
#2: Friday Night Lights. That this zoomed in, edited, improperly synced version is the only video of the intro uploaded to YouTube makes me want to cry. If we're speaking honestly, probably my favorite non-cartoon intro ever.
#1. Game of Thrones. Always and forever the G.O.A.T. No other intro captures the monumentality of its essence quite like Game of Thrones. I'm so fat right now, but if you pumped this music into my ears, I could probably climb Mount Everest right now.
OK. I can't not post ANY cartoon intros. So, I'll finish my post with two of the greatest ever.
(I had the biggest crush of Gadget and I wanted to be Chip SOOOOO badly when I was a kid. Molded me into the deranged fuck-up you see before you today.)
