We really don't know where Gared's story line is heading. All we know is that he's heading to the wall, and he'll do some stuff with the north grove, whatever that is.
What do you think will happen to him?

I am going to be optimistic and say he will be fine.

Someone, Jayko I think, had a theory that he will escape from the wall to help Duncan with the northen grove. He'll survive and help him, in the end will be executed by Jon, or other night's watch member for desertion. I still think that's what's gonna happen, so episode 6, I guess.

I support the theory that Brotato said.

I support the theory that "Miguel Alvarez" said. That's just Brotato that got bored of being Brotato.

He'll shadow Jon Snow in the show. Breaks his vows and shit, doesn't get executed. If Jon's leading the Night's Watch or has any kind of sway, he'll spare him.

I'm guessing that Gared is going to be the most important protagonist. He's the only one that knows things which the other protagonists don't. On top of that, he has the heaviest involvement with the first episode, and the longest screen time of the three protagonists.

Okay. I may have just found something huge related to the whole north grove plot. Spoilers for the world of Ice and Fire, as well as possible spoilers for the final episode (nothing from the files, so this could all be useless. ) The last episode is titled ice dragon.
And apparently, there's a possibility they actually exist. From the world of ice and fire:
βOf all the queer and fabulous denizens of the Shivering Sea (basically the ocean that's north east of the wall,) however, the greatest are the ice dragons. These colossal beasts, many times larger than the dragons of Valyria, are said to be made of living ice, with eyes of pale blue crystal and vast translucent wings through which the moon and stars can be glimpsed as they wheel across the sky. Whereas common dragons (if any dragon can truly be said to be common) breathe flame, ice dragons supposedly breathe cold, a chill so terrible that it can freeze a man solid in half a heartbeat. Sailors from half a hundred nations have glimpsed these great beasts over the centuries, so mayhaps there is some truth behind the tales. Archmaester Margate has suggested that many legends of the northβfreezing mists, ice ships, Cannibal Bay, and the likeβcan be explained as distorted reports of ice-dragon activity. Though an amusing notion, and not without a certain elegance, this remains the purest conjecture. As ice dragons supposedly melt when slain, no actual proof of their existence has ever been found.β
Note: italics are me, bold is my emphasis.
Take from this what you will.

So if you tell Jon Snow about the north Grove, Jon mentions something about Ice Dragons rising from Trees.
ICE DRAGONS RISING FROM TREES.

Surprised GRRM allow such a big thing to happen. Kind of overshadows the dragons of the TV Series. Jesus Christicles, that'll be awesome, though. Unless of course, it started as a metaphor for an oddly shaped mountain or something and was exaggerated until people thought it was alive.
