Well this is a weird teaser: Is that supposed to be a young Kyle and his mom?

Just copying my review of the episode from tumblr: Outcast Episode 1: A Darkness Surrounds Him - Review I’m going to try and figure out some sort of general format for this to use for future episodes. I’m thinking I’ll just give my general thoughts at first, go through what was good, what was bad, and then just talk about a few things I want to talk about concerning the episode. So, I’m going to try that, first.
Again, if you didn’t watch the episode, you can watch it here.
This was a really excellent first episode that was pretty faithful to the comics. A few things were changed around here and there from the comics - some of those changes, in my opinion, didn’t work - but ignoring that, I can’t think of any problems. The episode kept a great balance of intensity and quieter, character driven moments, and the direction and acting was superb.
What Worked:
The acting in this show really is incredible. Patrick Fugit(Kyle) and Wrenn Schmidt(Megan) really brought the characters to life, and Philip Glenister(Reverend Anderson) brought an interesting take to the character. I also have to mention Gabriel Bateman as Joshua because he was really fucking creepy A lot of moments honestly made me skin crawl even when I thought I was prepared for it. In particular, the opening scene with Joshua, and Kyle’s first flashback to his mother. The flashbacks weren’t overwhelming as I had feared they would be(although this is a double-edged sword in a way). The exorcism scene was fantastic. There were some really creepy moments and once it got going, it was really intense. I love the interactions between Megan and Kyle. We got more of those than in Issue 1 of the comic. While I do have some issues with the show’s Reverend Anderson, I do love the… attitude, I suppose of that character. It’s a different take, and one that I’m interested to see… but for now, he is a really entertaining character to have on screen. One thing that I think the show surpasses the comic with is the feel of the town. In the comics, Rome felt sort of empty for the longest time, but it feels immediately alive in the show I loved Kyle’s conversation with Norville(?), and there were a few details that made it just that much more interesting than it was in the comic. What Didn’t Work:
My biggest problem with the show has to be the change to Reverend Anderson as a character. He’s a lot more intense and head-strong than he was in the comic, and it’s not really a change I like. He really does embody that idea of being this “gung-ho holy warrior” in the show, but I felt his crises of faith and his desire to be that holly warrior and failing that we see in the comic was a big part of his character. No poker monologues. I mean, I suppose you could argue that there’s not a whole lot of subtly to them and so it made sense to cut them, but some of the dialogue in the show that made it in isn’t very subtle, so… Examples of that: “What else did you do that day?” “I hit her” It justifies Kyle’s actions more and it isn’t very subtle. Also, everyone talking about “dark forces”, and Megan very loudly saying that it’s bullshit and saying that Kyle’s mother was sick and people in this backwards town are crazy…. Just, those moments seemed a little too direct to the viewer. It wasn’t a big problem, but it was there, and since it was there, why cut Anderson’s poker monologues? Kyle deciding to visit Joshua on his own seems a bit weird and Kyle and Anderson meeting was another one of those very unsubtle moments. I think they should have kept Kyle and Anderson meeting like how they did in the comic. I really hope they didn’t cut Kyle talking to his mother in the hospital.
Overall, there were just a few moments that bugged me, but being that I’m a huge fan of the comic, that was to be expected. This was honestly an incredible first episode that didn’t change a whole lot from the comics, and added its own feel to the story. I can’t wait until June 10th for the next episode.

Guess I'll just post my initial thoughts on the episode since I'm saving my actual review for my YouTube channel: So man was that a great way to start this show! I haven't read Vol. 1 in over a year, but the episode really delivered. As you said Zyphon Fugit, Schmidt, and Glenister all really made me come to appreciate Kyle, Megan and Anderson alot, even more than I did in the comics! And yeah Joshua was fucking creepy. Seeing that stuff happen in a comic is one thing, but seeing it happen in a live action TV show is way more unsettling. Also do you have a side blog on Tumblr dedicated solely for Outcast? Because this is the exact same review that was on the blog "Outcast Fandom".

Some predictions for Episode 2: We'll see the scene from the "mud" teaser. (maybe when Kyle goes to talk to his mother in the nursing home?) Sidney's introduction. I'm interested to see if Norville will still die and maybe Sidney will pose as a friend or something, or if they'll keep Norville around. The episode will probably end with Luke showing up asking for Kyle's help. Kyle will meet Mildred. Some more flashbacks about Allison? (The episode is called "I Remember When She Loved Me", so...)

So is the episode premiering on June 3rd this, or is it gonna be a rerun of Ep. 1?

Fuck sake, went to watch it and it said it wasn't available in my country, I could always pirate it. Is it worth watching if you don't read the comics?

Just copying something I wrote for my tumblr blog, Outcast-Fandom: I’m just going to ramble a bit about Outcast as I try and take a critical analysis to it.
A while ago I talked about the theme of duality in how Outcast handles situations of abuse, self-harm, murder, or suicide. Recap: The whole idea of demonic possession reflects of theme of duality that’s backed up by the characters(when Blake says he feels he’s being torn in two), and each demon ostensibly represents one of the things I listed. For Kyle’ mother, it’s abuse, for Megan it was suicide, for Joshua it was self-harm, for Blake it was murder, etc. Not all of them fit, but a number of them do). In a lot of these cases, you can see how someone presents themself to the world as opposed to their struggle with their own inner demons(I think we’re shown Joshua’s mother and sister yelling at each other in the same scene he eats his finger for a reason). These situations have a duality of their own that is reflected by the idea of duality in demonic possession. In this way, Outcast, with it’s arguably allegorical story, explores the theme of duality not only as a part of the fiction, but as a real part of how people struggle with some of these situations, and the aftermath of them.
I think the show, at least in the first episode, is pushing another theme into the mix: perspective. Firstly, there’s a lot of symbolism(or at least imagery) with eyes. The close-up(out of focus slightly) of Joshua’s eye at the start, close-ups of Kyle’s eye as he’s dreaming, and Kyle’s eye during the exorcism(reflected with the flashback opening with that same close-up of Kyle’s eye). There’s also a lot more time spent on showing how people think of Kyle based on their perspective. Well, mainly just Mark, but still. In the comics, he just started shouting, but in the show, we get a discussion between Mark and Megan on if Kyle is dangerous or not. From Mark’s perspective, he legitimately believes Kyle to be dangerous and unstable. There’s also the scene in the Piggly Wiggly. Florence and that other woman believe that Kyle’s mother was possessed, Megan believes that she was just sick.
I think this works in tandem with the comic’s focus on duality. Not only is there a duality to people struggling with their own, figurative, inner demons, but perspective can definitely bend how others think about those people and their situations. Whatever that struggle manifests into, duality and perspective both play a role, both for the person dealing with it, and to those around it.

Seems as though Cinemax is really trying to show how various characters have varying opinions on the same situations, which should be interesting when Kyle and Anderson ever deal with Sherry like they do in the comics.

Huh, the official Outcast twitter account sent me a link to the first episode.
Which might have been cool if it wasn't already a full week since it premiered of YouTube, but still, cool.
