Playing as Brannigan wouldn't really work that well because the palyer would know far more about the world than the player charact+er, which would be very frustrating. I think we essentially need to play as a Fable. Aside from Bigby, my top 3 protagonists would be:
1. Cryer 2. Jack 3. Cinderella

Gren seems pretty pointless as a protagonist. All he does is sit around in Holly's bar and drinks. He doesn't have any connection with the Fabletown government and isn't someone like Jack who just goes around and does random shit for kicks. He'd be kinda boring frankly.

I'd be ok with playing as Cindy or cryer.

Now I really want a Telltale's Jack of Fables game, not canon to the series though, just continuing off of The Great Fables Crossover, and then doing it's own thing, separate form Jack of Fables, because everything past the Great Fables Crossover is complete bullshit. Even for Jack of Fables. It's the stupidest fucking thing ever, and the fact that there are aware of it and make jokes about it doesn't change the fact that it was fucking awful.

I'm trying to forget the events of the last three Jack books. They just never happened, that awful ending, and the two pointless books leading up to it just never happened.
A Telltale's Jack of Fables game would be fantastic, and now a know the perfect place for it to be, just branch off from how The Great Fables Crossover ended, and go on a separate, less awful path. At this point, I want a Telltale's Jack of Fables game more than I even want Season 2 of the Wolf Among Us.
And if that doesn't happen, I'm just going to keep on acting as if The Great Fables Crossover was the end of the Jack books, and the last three don't exist.

Bump.
I still stick by Brannigan being a good protagonist for a potential second season.

You know, I can actually think of how Grendel could be a good protagonist for a second season and/or something Fables related.
I mean, for one, his title in the Book of Fables is "Drifter", not "Barfly" or anything like that, so I think what Dome said about him just going to the Trip Trap and bitching and not doing much of anything else probably isn't true for him.
Since Lilly is dead, he probably doesn't have much of a reason to stick around in Fabletown anymore. Episode One could start with him leaving Fabletown. We'd talk to some people from Season One, and maybe see how our choices had an immediate effect on the community(obviously there will never bee any long-term effect since it's just a prequel to Fables), then he'd leave Fabletown and just wander.
Essentially a similar set up to what Jack of Fables was like in the beginning, but a little less ridiculous since it's Grendel instead of Jack. I can totally see Grendel passing himself off as a human and getting involved in the mob or something or owing some people money. Obviously we'd meet other Fables, since not all of them live in Fabletown... Honestly, I think that could be a really cool set-up for a whole new story, but with a similar feel and aesthetic to The Wolf Among Us.
Also, Telltale might want to do something like that since it gives them a free pass to make almost none of the choices matter past Episode One.
Although, I would be really interested to see how, if this ever became a thing(it never will), Tell would handle Gren having his arm or not.
